Cartoonist Gopulu dies

CHENNAI, April 30, 2015

Noted cartoonist Gopulu, who captured the flavour of everyday life of his period in his illustrations for Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan, died here on Wednesday. He was 91 and is survived by his son.

“He was as serious artist and could draw on any subject, including political cartoons. His illustrations for novels such as Thillana Mohanambal and Washingtonil Thirumanam were received well,” said T.S. Sridhar, former joint-editor of Ananda Vikatan and a fellow cartoonist.

Mr. Sridhar, who knew Gopulu since his Kumbakonam days, said he always sported a smile on his face. On his retirement from the magazine after an over two-decade stint, he drew for other magazines and even ran an advertisement agency.

A native of Thanjavur, Gopulu studied in Government Arts College in Kumbakonam before coming under the tutelage of Maali, who was in-charge-of arts department of the magazine. It was he who changed his original name Gopalan as Gopulu.

“He was one of the great masters — Maniam, Shilpi, S. Rajam and Madhavan. I will call him the Bhishma among them,” said artist Maniam Selvan, whose father Maniam illustrated for Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan and Sivakamiyin Sabatham .

Gopulu had observed and assimilated the work of American painter and illustrator Norman Rockwell and famous cartoonist David Low and one could trace the elements of these great artists in his works.

I am Sri. Gopulu's fan.

His cartoons are amazing and kindles our thoughts.

Here is a write-up describing one of his popular cartoons:

images

மருந்தின் ருசியினால் அழும் பெண் குட்டி;

கூட்டுக் குடும்பம் கலகலப்பு நிறைந்தது;
ஏட்டில் பார்த்து இன்று இளைஞர் அறிவது!

இன்று காணக் கிடைக்காத அந்தக் காட்சி;
அன்று கோபுலு வரைந்த படம்தான் சாட்சி!

May his soul rest in peace. :pray2:

Ananda Vikatan was embellished with the cartoons of Gopulu...I really enjoyed his cartoons...He is a great cartoonist, character designer and illustrator...His cartoons for Thillana Mohanambal & Washingtonil Thirumanam were very lively...The cartoons portrayed a contemporary life style especially Brahmin way of life..It is a great loss to the cartoon world! May his soul rest in peace!

Look at the man who is supposed to be the father of the child..He seems to be pretty old but having a child..In my village the mama opposite our house had 11 kids & his last one was born when he was in his mid 50's..
.

It will be very interesting to see if some official goes to his office with tuft, a flask, vibhuti and in full suit in this modren day.Probably this was common during the British rule.Very lively and true to life cartoon by the gifted artist.

Today in my facebook feed, I got to view some more gems from Gopulu ji. Enjoy the following cartoon works of the genius:

Gopulu, a painting by Maniam Selvan

Admirers and artists recall the versatile Gopulu, whose drawings were funny and inspirational.

‘The One and Only Gopulu’ was the title of the programme organised by S.G. Sridharan and AL. AR. C. Narayanan, both long time admirers of Gopulu, to pay tribute to the artist who passed away recently.

Sridharan said that if Gopulu’s characters remained etched in our memory, it was because, whatever Gopulu saw remained etched in his. For example, Venkittu in ‘Tuppariyum Sambu,’ doesn’t have all his marbles, and is ready to break Sambu’s crown with a stone, if Sambu doesn’t cough up money on demand. Gopulu’s drawing of Venkittu is lifelike. Gopulu said he remembered a schoolmate of his in Kumbakonam and had patterned Venkittu after him.

Gopulu's advice to Maniam Selvan was: “An artist must keep his eyes and ears open, but keep his mouth shut. His pictures must speak for him.” And what a treat Gopulu’s silent jokes used to be!

Gopulu was an all rounder. He did illustrations and cartoons for stories that were historical, religious, humorous and serious. Maniam Selvan’s father used to say that he himself did not attempt cartooning, because his expertise lay in doing illustrations for historical pieces, and that it was difficult to shake off the influence of one’s area of specialty. But it was not so with Gopulu. Expertise in one genre never spilled over into another.
