Can Lord Anantha Padmanabhaswamy be woken by Suprabatham?

The dispute

Celestials and all living beings are equally desirous of obtaining the Lord’s darshan. Why the recital of the shlokas should give rise to dispute can only be understood if one is aware that the principal idol that is installed in the temple features Vishnu in the Anantha Sayanam pose, one of the nine postures in which the Lord is found in eternal yogic sleep on the serpent Adishesha.

As argued by advocate KK Venugopal, who represents the Royal family of Travancore, for whom Sri Padmanabhaswamy is the tutelary deity, Vishnu is in eternal yogic sleep and thus cannot, and must not, be woken up from his deep slumber. Venugopal further submitted that the recitation of the Suprabhatam at Tirumala, where Vishnu is installed in the form of Venkatachalapathy, is appropriate since here the idol is in a standing position.

Speaking as amicus curiae, Gopal Subramanium took the opposite stance. According to NDTV news, he “argued that Suprabhatam is being recited in the temple and since stanzas of the shlokas mention Lord Padmanabhaswamy, it must continue.”

As the two-judge bench of the Supreme Court (wisely) noted, “How [the] Lord is awakened and by what song is a matter of faith. We would not like to go into this. Let the Chief Tantri (priest) decide.”

The secularists will likely find some relief at this pronouncement, even if they are unhappy that the court’s time should have been wasted when there are urgent problems calling for the court’s attention.

There are some customs followed by many temples, and many of these may be illogical/irrational. Even idol worship is alien to the rigvedic scenario. But then, this temple here in Tiruvananthapuram is, I think, being eyed covetously by many and it will be rather unfortunate if the whole treasure is found vanished into thin air one fine morning! Supreme Court has also been dragged into this unholy game.

It seems the treasure belongs to the rulers of the time,whose presiding deity is the one being talked now. As the temple happens to be private property of the rulers, they might have dumped the treasure earned from various means (?) around the temple for future use.

As the temple is not so popular outside Kerala, like Tirupathi, the treasure, in all probability, belongs to the rulers. It is high time the Central Govt. seriously looks into the matter and nationalizes the treasure, without any further delay.

But as usual no one explains the actual significance of anything and people recite Suprabhatam or play Suprabhatam CDs in the morning in a mechanical manner thinking that we can actually awaken an external God.

No wonder almost whole of mankind is blissfully asleep even though Suprabhatam is played daily!

The concept that Ananthapadmanabha is in 'yoga nidra' is, in a mundane way, correct according to me. Because the god power within and without all of us is not an 'active' agent like what we are. It is always latent, a permanent witness and nothing more. It cannot do anything, even cure our common cold.

There is a mythical lore of kerala according to which a great jnAni, one of the sons of vararuchi and brother of Awwaiyar, called "nARANattu bhrAntan" நாறாணத்து ப்ராந்தன் (NB for short, meaning the mad fellow of nARANam) used to roll heavy rocks from the bottom to a hill top and then roll it down. He used to spend his whole time this way. Once Kali appeared before him and told him she would grant one boon; NB laughed and said what power she (Kali) had to give him boon. Kali got very upset and at this NB asked her to change the elephant's foot he had on one leg to the other but Kali could not do that because NB was fated to have elephantiasis on that particular foot only!

Traditionally, there has been no suprabhatam business in TVPM padmanabha temple. I feel such customs should continue without change.

This treasure is mostly made up of pillages during the wars waged by Marthanda Varma of the 18th. century against more than a score native 'kingdoms' spanning Trivandrum to Alwaye. There could be riches from many households and we would not know whether non-hindu houses were pillaged or looted. Secondly, the treasure may include penalties or fines imposed on different sections of the people for various, perceived crimes. Definitely the treasure includes gold coins submitted by foreign traders.

True. But the available history also says that the more than a score native kingdoms were all hindu kingdoms spanning Trivandrum to Aluva.

The treasure was donated by the kings along with the kingdom to Sri Padmanabhaswamy.

So there is logic in arguing that the treasure belongs to the temple and that next in line will be the hindus who can own it through the Dewaswom Board and utilise the money exclusively for the welfare of Hindus. Christians and other religions take care of their followers by heavy grant and remittances from abroad. So they can do without this treasure. Or else they can consolidate all the wealth including that of the churches and Mosques and use them for the common man.
