Books on Hinduism and Hindu Religious practices

I would like to compile a list of Books on Hinduism and Hindu religious practices which would be helpful to all Hindus. I will be listing books with which I am familiar and have used in my Religious practice.

1. Vishnu Sahasranamam: The Best book in my opinion for parayanam is the one published by LIFCO. It gives detailed guide lines and also includes all the Bhashyams.

Sri Sahasranama Series

LIFCO is a treasure house of religious books. Founded by Sri. Krishnaswami Sharma, they have been doing a wonderful service for decades now. All of us are aware of the company and the Kainkaryam that they have been doing for decades.

Both these books are by Legendary Anna Subramania Iyer.

Ramakrishna Math, Chennai has been doing yeomen service by publishing many books on Hinduism and Hindu religious practices. Most of these were authored by Anna.

I request other members to post about Books which they have used in their religious practice.

This is only the beginning. A comprehensive list would take quite some time to compile.

Contains the essential Vedic mantras including the Vedic sukthams, Upanishds etc. with Swara marks for recitation. A handy pocket edition is avalable for taking when you visit temples.

I have a number of books on Sri Vidya and other Pujas written by ஸ்ரீ வித்யா ஞான பாஸ்கரா "நஜன் " (S. Natarajan) and Published by பிரதிபா பிரசுரம். These were written and published long back. The edition of this book is dated 1994. I bought it in 1994. They are all excellent books for Upasakas.

2. Auspicious wisdom - The text and traditions of Sri Vidya Sakta Tantrism in South India - by Douglas Renfrew Brooks - Manohar
Publishers and distributors, New Delhi - An excellent well researched book on Sri Vidya.

3. Quintessence of Sri Vidya by T.V. Kapali Sastry - Dipti publications, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry.

4. Varivasya Rahasya by Sri Bhaskara Raya Makhin - Edited with English translation by Pandit S. Subrahmanya Sastri - The Adyar

1. Hindu Manners, Customs and Ceremonies By Duboi - Oxford University Press

A must read for all Indians. Though it shows the extreme prejudice against Hinduism, the book throws light on Various aspects of Indian life in 1900 A.D.


2. The Wonder that was India - by A.L. Basham - Rupa & Co, New Delhi - The title says it all. Must read for all Indians.

3. India By AL-Biruni - National Book Trust of India

The famous Travelogue. Extreme prejudice against Hindus. But it throws light on India around 1000 A.D
