Beware! Those pickpockets in Delhi Metro are women.

When one thinks of pickpockets, one would usually imagine a shadylooking fellow, loitering around at a public place eyeing his target. However, according to the recent data released by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), among the total pickpockets nabbed in the Delhi Metro in 2013, 92 per cent of them are women.

The CISF has caught a total of 451 pickpockets from Januray 1 to November 20 this year, out of which 415 are women, whereas only 36 are men. In June, a total of 115 female pickpockets were nabbed as opposed to only one man. In October, 26 female pickpockets were nabbed, while no male sneak thief was caught.

Most of these women are well-educated, well-dressed, carry laptops, backpacks and look like any other commuter, making it extremely difficult to identify them and can only be nabbed in action.

"There is no specific look which can help identify them. They look like another harmless lady travelling alongside you, but statistics prove that they aren't that harmless. In fact, some of the ones we have nabbed were dressed in business formals (branded clothes), usually carrying a conference bag and pretending to work on their laptop," a CISF official said.

Many of them even carry a baby, wear salwar kameez or sari to avoid any suspicion.

"They operate during rush hours for obvious reasons and take advantage of crowded trains. These women are mostly active on the Yellow line (Jahangirpuri to Huda City Centre). While, one wouldn't expect a sneak thief to speak fluent English, these women do. And hence can easily be mistaken as a working professional or a college student," he added.

According to sources, most of these women work in a gang and board the trains as a team during rush hours. The Delhi Metro Rail Police (DMRP) had arrested one such gang of 21 women sneak thieves in 2011. But even if these women are caught during the act, victims don't pursue the case and as a result, the antisocial elements are let off with only a warning.

"The DMRC security force in association with Delhi Police has sent pictures of the usual suspects to all Metro stations and we do surveillance through CCTV cameras. As in when, any of them are spotted at the stations, they are immediately stopped and interrogated. Furthermore, there are also officials in civil uniforms deployed to monitor the stations and curb these activities," the official said.

What about Sing. Chennai? After one bad experience, I stopped travelling by any crowded bus.

On one fine morning, I left for shopping at T'nagar. I had two purses - one with nearly Rs. 500 - in lower denominations and

another one with a few thousands. Both were in my hand bag, which was hanging from my right shoulder. For safe keeping,

I had covered it with the pallu of my saree. When a sudden brake was applied by the bus driver, I had to hold the top railing with

my right hand, to avoid falling down. Within a few seconds, my arm was back in place to protect my bag. After getting down and

purchasing some stuff for Rs. 50, I found that the zipper of my handbag was half open and purse stolen! The lady standing behind

me was so swift in her action that within the few seconds when I lifted my right, finished her operation successfully!

By God's grace, the purse with huge money was intact!

you know RRji there is a serious gender issue . men who get their pockets picked by these ladies do not like to file an FIR against these lady pickpockets Men feel ashamed as they have been cheated by ladies.God bless these ladies

I will tell you about A thief who broke into my home in delhi this week when I was in south and singapore for winter vacation. He entered thru the drawing room window removing one grill and twisting another. He removed all the sanitory fitting costing over 10 thousand rupees besides breaking wash basin and flooded my home. Interestingly he did not touch any electronics or jewellery or money except a box of coins or expensive sarees. It took me four hours to drain my home. and it has taken more than 3 days to return my home to original conditions. surprise. -police responded in half an hour, with investigating officer, beat constable,SHO and crime branch responded in 3 hours with photographer and finger print experts. This is effect of AAM admi govt. police say it is work of poor drug addict boys who sell these fittings for couple of hundred rupees. I withdrew my FIR as I thought it was not worth following up . police told me court lets them off as they are juveniles and at best they can be sent to a remand home

Raji Madan/Krish Sir

I had faced similar situations

First about Pick pocket fellows in Crowded Chennai Buses

My wife had lost a Purse in a Crowded Bus containing Rs 700/- Fortunately she never carried any Debit card or Credit Card in that Purse.

I had lost both Hongkong and Citi Bank Credit Cards while travelling by a crowded Bus from Porur to T Nagar.

Before i could realize what i lost and complain to both the Banks, it was misused before Banks could block the Cards.

Nowadays whenever we Travel within the City we use Fast Track or similar Cabs, always avoid travelling by Auto.

In those days , i mean when colonies were developing in Chennai ( between 1980 to 1995 ) isolated homes were attacked by the organized thieves from Andhra and other places; these were reported Newspapers.

Dear P J Sir,

Many auto guys are behaving well now a days, after the enforcement of 'meter-charge-to-be-collected' rule.
Even if I pay ten rupees more than meter charge, they say 'thank you madam' with
a smile. :peace:

Dear Krish Sir,

It is impossible to file FIR because we don't know the face of the culprit and can't identify which rupee notes we lost!

Raji Madam

Thanks for the good news.

How about Auto Fellows in Places like Kumbakonam, and other smaller cities?

They charge Sky high.. for even a shorter distance

In our Porur Area, from Main Road to coming to our home which is less than 2 Km distance, they were charging Rs 50/-!!!

In your KK Nagar area it might not be a problem, but there are many colonies here in Porur, very interior, and Auto Fellows
demand sky high rates.

I think every Developing areas in Chromepet, St.Thomasmount, Nanganallur, Tambaram etc etc there is no proper transport system with the result these Auto Fellows flinch commuters .

Every where in Tamilnadu, Meter System is to be introduced, so that people are put into trouble for commuting.

Dear P J Sir,

I wrote 'many auto guys' behave well which means NOT all of them! I usually wait for such a guy.

And found that 50% are good! :)

you know RRji ,delhi men refused to file FIR even when lady pickpockets were identified with their purses as they were ashamed that ladies picked their pockets.I withdrew Fir against the petty thief who took away the sanitory fittings at my place out of sympathy for the poor guy who took only small money for drug consumption probably . more importantly ,I did not want policemen landing up every second day under the pretext of investigation . One of south indian ladies who had her chain snatched is a neighour of mine. the police since she filed an FIR tried getting friendly with her and drop in at her place at odd times when husband was not around . he would strike up a conversation and ask to be given tea or coffee and behave inappropriately. she quietly withdrew the complaint and told the police not to call on her. do you like this

You must be a good face reader to identify the good auto driver. I also agree some behave well after new regulations have come.

in developing colonies and far off suburbs it is still an issue. hopefully it will change. it is auto drivers contention the fares of tn govt are not renumerative as they do not get return passengers in these areas.since iI am not a chennai resident I do not know if this is the case. I stayed in nanganallur for couple ofdays. two out of three refused and third went by meter and took ten rupees extra

Raji Madam

Whenever we go to Kumbakonam to visit various Temples, the Taxis are charging Rs 900/- for 4 Hours and Rs 1800/- for 8 hours, and the KM is 100 for 4 hours and 200 for 8 hours; it is obvious that when we visit Temples, it is not going to run
more than 30 - 40 Km in a day!!

Autos are even more costlier, they just demand Rs 200/- for 4 km distance.

This is the position in most small cities in Tamilnadu.

Regarding Autos going to interior areas in Chennai, it is not that they will not get return journey passengers, but they use this to charge more.

It is time for the Government to allow share autos to cater the needs of these commuters from far off colonies.

New wave 'choodu meter'! That is what we saw this evening. While going to a kalyaNa mandapam, the meter charge was

around Rs. 125 for 9+ kms. We gave 140. While coming back, we noticed that the meter was jumping 0.1 k.m for each second

- that is 1 rupee 20 paise per 1 second waiting! When we reached home, the k.m reading showed 13 + kms and Rs. 170/.

What an idea Sir Ji!

Raji Madam

We Avoid going by Auto, engage only Call Taxi which will be much more cheaper than than these Choodu Metered Autos.

Mrs RR, you are giving out so much details of your activities, it looks like you believe there are no pick-pockets in this forum!

The episode is given in detail to show that covering the handbag with pallu of a saree is NOT going to save your purse!

BTW, some mAmAs used to stitch a secret pocket inside their banian for safe keeping huge cash! But sadly, it is not possible for women!!

Moral of the episode: Never travel standing in a bus and always hold your handbag tight, while getting into / out of the bus.
