Bengaluru residents come together to send lake encroachers packing
Following a Mirror report, all it took to rescue Chinnappanahalli Lake from encroachment was one phone call to the officials
On Saturday morning, the lake warriors of the city scored a much-needed victory in the weary fight against apathy and commercial greed. When encroachers felled six trees, broke the wire fencing and attempted to mark a plot inside the children's park at Chinnappanhalli Lake at 8 am on Saturday, officials of the Karnataka Lake Development Authority (KLDA), the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Forest Department swooped down upon them almost immediately, and not only stopped the illegal activity, but also booked them for trespassing, cutting down of trees and encroachment. This, after Bangalore Mirror's report 'Please don't go' (May 8, 2017) on how Prabhashankar Rai, a lone warrior for Chinnappanhalli Lake and President and Managing Trustee of the Lake Trust, was exiting the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with the BBMP for maintenance and upkeep of the lake after the civic body had reneged on its promises. Stung by that report, this time, officials swung into action after just one call by Rai to BV Sathish, Chief Engineer, Lakes. In another victory, Rai informs that following the BM report, Sathish has been reinstated two weeks ago, replacing his predecessor Somashekar, who was transferred
