In Orissa, a village of Sanskrit pundits
In Orissa, a village of Sanskrit pundits - Other Authors | hindujagruti.org

Sanskrit may have ceased to be spoken by people, but there is a remote village in this coastal district of Orissa where every home has a pundit of the ancient language.

Sasana village in the Shyamsundar gram panchayat area is almost an anachronism in today's culture which no longer takes pride in mastering the language which, along with Latin, was once the two most dominant languages in the world.

The village, inhabited almost fully by Brahmins, has a little over 32 households with 200-odd members. In all the households one will come across Sanskrit pundits employed in government-run Sanskrit-medium educational institutions.

"We are proud patrons of Sanskrit. The ancient language is very much alive at the village, 76-year-old Baishnav Charan Pati, a Sanskrit pundit who has retired from his teaching job, said.

Pati said that they made sure for generations that at least one child in every household had been taught in the Sanskrit medium of education.

"Most of the Sanskrit-educated residents have found employment either in government schools or have taken up career as priests to preside over Hindu ceremonies,'' Pati said.

Take the case of Pundit Trilochan Sadangi. Both his sons and daughter are Sanskrit-educated and are teaching the language in government-run schools.

"By encouraging our children to learn Sanskrit, we are trying to revive the language. We are largely successful till now and we earnestly hope that our future generations will keep the tradition alive,'' Pati said with a tinge of pride.

The village's fascination for Sanskrit has not come from the blue, but rather flowed from its rich tradition in Sanskrit learning.

A nearby village Babkarpur has the presence of a miniature temple dedicated to the great poet Kalidasa, author of 'Abhigyana Shakuntalam' and many other classics, which tells eloquently of the region's love for the things Sanskrit.

I am glad to see two things (among others) in the above news:

01. The year is mentioned as 5112, of the Kali era, and the Gregorian date given in brackets.

02. Current PIThAdhipati of KAnchi Shankara MaTham, pUjyashrI Jayendra Sarasvati SvAmigaL's name is among the list of participants. When this event comes through, (I think) PeriyavA will be the first pontiff in the sampradAya of KAnchi MaTham to go overseas. This visit will be another ratnam in his spiritual crown, as he has been extensively travelling throughout India, like his Guru, even at this age.

In the earlier news about Dindigul Girivalam, B.R.Haran has mentioned "Pujya Periyava spoke about the importance of temple worship, and eradication of caste discrimination." Let us also note it and use it against any false propaganda about AchAryas of ShrIMaTham, KAnchi.

Sanskrit taught in Philosophy Day School, Newyork
Philosophy Day School

The children are introduced to the study of a classical language, Sanskrit, in Kindergarten.

Sanskrit instruction takes place once a week for Kindergarteners and starting in First Grade, twice a week. A Sanskrit specialist see students who join the class at a later stage (i.e. after the ages of six or seven) or for remedial purposes, individually or in small groups, within the classroom setting or in the language resource classroom. The Sanskrit Program is tailored to the specific needs of the student and ensures that students catch up with the rest of the class by being given special attention.

sai,

thanks for the info about philosophy day school.

seeing that it is new york city, maybe i can give some clarifications, about the role of such private schools in the u.s.

this particular school has chosen sanskrit as a selling point, not out of any religiosity towards hinduism, but more as an exotic yet relevant values passed on from the ancient wise.

there are ancient wise in all civilizations - greek, roman, assyrian, tamil (sangam), sanskrit et al. compared to all the ancient socieites, tamil society is still intact and the language very much alive, though i do not know how long, in the face of the current assault from the new popular medias.

back to this school. the u.s. has a publicly funded school system, which is meant to provide quality but egalitarian schooling to all its citizens irrespective of economic circumstances.

in many parts of the u.s. this is only in name, the quality of the school varying with where it is located. the poorer the school district, and schools where more minorities attend, the more poorly furbished it is.

there are two groups who shun public schools. one is the christian right wing fundamentalists, who consider it against their religion to the essential secular public school education.

the other is the rich. the philosophy school, appears to me, to appeal to the rich - yet eclectic thinking parents. for normal rich, the classic study would be slanted toward greek or maybe roman. the esoteric sanskrit is an attempt to stand apart & get noticed, i think.

this is not to belittle the glory of sanskrit. i thought that i will just put this school in perspectives, as i see it, from north of the 49th parallel which is the boundary between the u.s. and canada.

i am quite sure there are secular schools in india, which offer sanskrit, without the religious overtones, which obviously, by their very vocation, our veda patasalas do.

in my youth, sanskrit was the preferred second language of many of my cousins, for the simple reason stated to me, that it was easier to score higher marks in sanskrit than in tamil. i do not know if this is still true.

thank you.
