After battling a 38-hr blaze, the Chennai Silks will be brought down, this is how it’ll happen

The demolition process is expected to take three days.

What was once one of the tallest buildings in Chennai’s North Usman Road – the commercial hub of the city- is now a smouldering ruin of iron and steel.

The fire that was raging in the Chennai Silks building for 38 hours was finally put out by firefighters at around 8.30pm on Thursday. The seven-storey building is a shell of what it once was. Four floors caved in, ravaged by the fire, while the façade has been destroyed by flames, smoke and firefighters, who used every possible means to contain the blaze. What remains of the Chennai Silks showroom stands dangerously on this arterial, crowded stretch, that is home to silk sarees, and gold jewellery.

The demolition process began on Friday morning, once the state government gave the nod to demolishing the Chennai Silks building, which had violated several norms. The process which will be spread out over the course of three days, is being carried out by the Chennai Corporation, Public Works Department, technical experts from IIT and Parveen Traders, a private entity.

It is reported in media that non-functional fire sensors and water sprinklers were of the reasons the fire quickly spreads to other floors.

May be just mere show pieces to satisfy the rules and regulations.....

I feel extremely sorry for Chennai silks for the huge loss that they have incurred due to fire. Now after the unfortunate incident the usual blame game will start. But we should understand, how much of human effort in weaving would have lost due to failure of the system.
Let us hope this accident teach a lesson for all.

The entire T.Nagar, North Usman Road is a tinder box. With narrow roads how will fire fighting equipment reach in case of any calamity..It is a disaster waiting to happen....A safety and security audit should be conducted and loop holes plugged on a war footing

‘Moulivakkam tragedy exposed dark side of construction business’

Justice R. Regupathy Commission that inquired into the circumstances led to the collapse of the multi-storeyed building at Moulivakkam in which 55 persons were killed and many injured, has made series of recommendations including a comprehensive legislation for making insurance package compulsory for builders.

The incident took place on June 28, 2014.

The report of the commission that was tabled in Assembly on Tuesday suggested comprehensive legislation or vitalisation of the existing legislation so that essential features like insurance package creating triangular responsibilities among bank, builder and customer could me made.

Introducing penal provisions, insisting upon the construction firms taking up mega projects to deposit a sizable sum in fixed deposit for 10 years are the other measures recommended by the commission.

Justice Regupathy also recommended reconstitution of the CMDA at the foundation level by forming a committee consisting of a technical officer of the agency, a law officer, experts in soil investigation, foundation design, structural engineering to compulsorily monitor all mega projects.

The reading from the ground during the Chennai floods and relief measures of the past few days is straightforward: people power has far outweighed the response of the government. To anyone out doing voluntary work last week, a clear pattern was visible: the poor saved themselves; the middle class saved each other, while the rich and powerful did not need any saving.

But before we start celebrating the “spirit of Chennai” and patting ourselves on the backs for “fighting back,” it is only fair we identify what it is that we are fighting against. For that, we need to take a look at ourselves in the mirror.

To begin with, it's easy to blame all Chennai's problems on politicians. After all, successive governments have failed to give Chennai a holistic vision, with the result that we have only seen incremental improvements to the city’s infrastructure for a long time. Neither of the two main political parties has been able to able to win a second term in the Tamil Nadu assembly since 1991, as a consequence of which the city has suffered an uneven vision and choppy execution of ideas.

கடைக்கு சரக்குகளை இந்தியா முழுவதிலிருந்தும் சப்ளை செய்தவர்கள் அனைவரும் தங்கள் பணத்தினை பெற அதற்குண்டான ஆவணங்களை மீண்டும் தர வேண்டும். அது எத்தனை பெரிய முயற்சி. சென்னை சில்க்ஸ் எவ்வளவு பெரிய நிறுவனமாக இருப்பினும், அதன் உரிமையாளர்கள் எவ்வளவுதான் பணம் வைத்திருந்தாலும் அவர்களின் மனம் என்ன பாடுபடும். பணம் நிறைய இருந்தால் மன உளைச்சல் குறைந்து விடுமா என்ன? மீண்டும் இதனை சீர் செய்ய எவ்வளவு முயற்சி, பணம், உழைப்பு, மனிதர்கள் வேண்டும்!
நமக்கென்ன.. எளிதாக கமென்ட் அடித்து, அடுத்தவர்களின் கஷ்டத்தை, துன்பத்தை விளையாட்டாக எண்ணி விடுகின்றோம். ஒரு வாரத்தில் அதனை மறந்து அடுத்ததாக எதைப் பற்றி எழுதி கலாய்க்கலாம், விமர்சிக்கலாம், வியாபாரமாக்கலாம் என்று கடந்து விடுகின்றோம்.
ஜப்பான் போன்ற நாடுகளில் இத்தகைய ஓர் இழப்பினை மனிதர்களின் உழைப்பின் இழப்பாக, விரயமாக கருதுகின்றார்கள். ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் உழைப்பை மதிக்கின்றார்கள். யாருடைய நஷ்டத்தினையும் நாட்டின் பொருளாக, தமது இழப்பாக கருதுகிறார்கள். நம்மால், நம்மில் பலரால் ஏன் இவ்வாறு நினைக்க முடிவதில்லை?
இதில் மனதை நிம்மதியுறச் செய்யும் ஒன்று, உயிர் பலியாகவில்லை என்பது தான் ஒரே ஆறுதலான விஷயம். பதிவுகளையும் விமர்சனங்களையும் தவிர்த்து கொஞ்சம் சிந்தித்து இந்த இழப்பு சென்னை சில்க்ஸ்க்கு மட்டுமில்லை இந்த நாட்டிற்கும், இந்த சமுதாயத்திற்கும் பேரிழப்பு ஆகும் என்பதை உணர்வோம்.
இந்த பேரிழப்பிலிருந்து சென்னை சில்க்ஸ் குடும்பத்தார் மீண்டு வர அவர்களுக்கு தேவையான மனவலிமையையும், அனைத்தையும் சமாளித்து புதுப்பொலிவுடன் வெளியில் வர மிகப்பெரும் ஆற்றலையும் அளிக்க ஆண்டவனை வேண்டி என்றும் நாம் உடன் துணையிருப்போம்'' என்று நாகராஜன் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
