Background
I had written about Aditya Hrdayam in a similar but not exactly same fashion few years back. Over the years, I had opportunity to go through deeper in different Rg vedic slokas and here I present my an improved, hopefully more coherent understanding of Aditya Hrdayam.
Aditya Hrdayam is a set of slokas present in Ramayana as the teachings of sage Agastya to Rama. Rama sulks (becomes concerned) on seeing Ravana who triumphantly enters the battle-field after being beaten so badly. Sage Agastya gives him this sloka that describes the evolution of Universe (in my understanding) and asks Ram to get spirited and fight.
It is generally seen as a sloka with which one can defeat their enemies. Our enemies are not other human beings. Our enemies are our failures, our defeats, our losses, our negative emotions, diseases etc. Aditya Hrdayam is hence recommended as a set of slokas for removing them too.
Aditya Hrdayam, in my view, talks about Dark Ages that came up in the evolution of Universe following the rise of Cosmic Microwave Background. The Dark Ages meant Universe could not evolve further.
But Universe did not get stalled. Reionization epoch happens post the Dark Age leading to structural formation and then stars and galaxies.
The message to Rama from Sage Agastya is, even the Universe has to fall into Dark Age before it came of life. So there is no point in Ram sulking on his Dark times. Ram has to get inspiration from that Consciousness that lords over the Universe and continue his struggles.
Aditya Hrdayam depicts a thermodynamics aspect to the Universe and says that there is a consciousness behind these explicit thermodynamics systems of evolution. It is that consciousness that we need to invoke when we have to fight our battles of life at critical moments.
The four thermodynamics laws that Universe is guides by are
1. Pusha (Zeroth law of heat that says All Heat are same)
2. Surya (1st Law that gives Mass-Energy-Mass transformation)
3. Savitr (Second Law that states disorder/entropy/information/intelligence always increases in a closed system)
4. Khaga (Third law that dictates some kinetic energy even in Ground state)
These four laws and eight matter forms originate the Universe and hence called Adityas.
The Prajapatis of Universe – Brahma and Vishnu
The Prajapatis are those who are the Patis of their Praja (subjects). The first two prajapatis are Brahma, and Vishnu.
Brahma and Vishnu are called ‘Praja-patis’, which means that they are the ‘Pati’ of their subjects (Subjects are those that under them or come after them).
Aditya Hrdayam says ‘Esa Brahma cha Vishnu cha (these Brahma and Vishnu) shiva skanda prajapati (are prajpatis of those that hop/emit/diffuse/evolve from shiva)’. For all those that emit/dropped out of Siva, the Dark Energy, Brahma and Vishnu are the Prajapati’s says Aditya Hrdayam.
I map Brahma as Gravity, Vishnu as Inertia (Rest-mass) and Siva as Dark energy that keeps expanding the Universe. We will see why and how in the following sections..
Six Skandas are the six types of energy that make the Universe.
Siva – The expanding force of Dark Energy
There are eleven force-fields that are at the root of evolution. I map these to eleven Rudras. Read TheBigThinkg Vedic Studies: Eleven Rudras - Eleven force fields
They are
1. Ishana Rudra - Force-field of Dark Energy (This expands the Universe)
2. Tat Purusha Rudra-Force-field of Dark Matter (science says Dark Matter does not impact matter).
3. Vamadeva Rudra - Force-field of Gravity
4. Aghora Rudra - Force field of Higgs
5. Ahir Budhnya - Force-field of Strong force
6. NrRti - Force-field of Weak force
7. Adityatmaka sri Rudra - Force-field of Quantum force that causes Pauli's exclusion
8. Pinaka - Static magnetic force field
9. MrgavyAdha - Changing/transient magnetic force field (Electro-Motive force)
10. Kapalin - Static Electric Force field
11. Virupaksha - Changing/transient Electric force field
Skanda – The Six forms of Energy
Six forms of energy perspire/diffuse in matter.
These six forms of energy are called Skanda. Skanda means that which diffused, hopped. These six forms of energy perspire/diffuse in the matter and influence the matter.
The six forms of energy are, according to science, Nuclear energy, Thermal energy, Chemical energy, Mechanical Energy, Electrical Energy and Electro-Magnetic Energy. Hence Skanda is said to be six faced ‘son’ of Shiva, the Dark energy expanding the Universe.
Subrahmanya which means causing good expansion or movement corresponds to any energy that causes expansion or movement. This is a combination of Potential and Kinetic energy and generally referred to as Mechanical energy.
Karthikeya which means one that is born of the siva’s (matter’s) agni (fire, heat) corresponds to Thermal Energy. This thermal energy is cause of evolution of all atoms, elements and molecules.
Guha, which means reared in secret place, is the name of Skanda that corresponds to Nuclear energy. This nuclear energy hidden deep inside is the Guha.
Saravana bhava which means born of arrow forest or forest of reeds corresponds to Radiant energy. Radiant energy or Electrical Energy is like arrows that come from a bed of arrows.
Vizakha which means one that causes to be branchless/forkless (vi – less, zAkha – branch, fork). It is the electrical energy or electric potential energy or electrostatic potential energy that results from coloumb forces between two point charges.
Kumara which means deficient (ku) in death (mara), young, who can live long corresponds to Chemical energy. This is called the Apa or celestial waters. The Chemical energy is the basis of evolution of life and hence is called Kumara.
