[h=4]Hands-on management by the NDA government seems to indicate a dramatic turnaround of the coal and electricity sector.[/h]Fixing coal and electricity production is a nuts-and-bolts issue that is unlikely to make headlines. However, news reports and underlying data indicate that the coal and power industry is being turned around by the National Democratic Alliance government. The importance of coal and electricity in India cannot be stressed enough. The below data from The Wall Street Journal indicates that 61 per cent of India’s electricity needs come from coal. And India underperforms compared to other developing countries when it comes to providing electricity access.

The chart shows equally good growth or improvement during the period 2009-10 to 2012-13. Why is all credit being given to NDA?
 
What the chartist or the blog writer is emphasizing is that under UPA 2 rule the coal production grew by just 6% whereas coal based electricity generation capacity grew by 734%.

So addition to thermal electricity generation was being met through import of coal, though India has the world's largest/second largest coal reserves. Proper functioning and administration of coal ministry, more particularly the government monolith Coal India could have saved considerable foreign exchange outgo and corruption in the private coal production in the form of coal scam slowed down reforms.
