The Tamil Nadu Government on Saturday announced a 40 per cent hike in the retail price of toned milk, the popular variety being marketed by Aavin, from Rs. 24 per litre to Rs. 34 per litre.

The hike will come into effect from November 1.

The development came a day after the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission held its first public hearing in Chennai for the proposed power tariff increase.

Making the announcement in the retail price, Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, in a statement, said that the procurement prices of cow milk and buffalo milk would also go up by Rs. 5 per litre and Rs. 4 per litre respectively. This meant that Aavin would, hereafter, buy milk at the rate of Rs. 28 per litre and Rs. 35 per litre.

The Chief Minister justified the hike in the retail prices of milk, saying that it had been made to recover the rise in the procurement prices and recover the cost of processing.

He asserted that even after the latest round of increase, the retail price of milk in the State would be less, compared to the prices of private dairies and other State cooperative federations.
