Shri Govinda,

A very good attempt. Thank you.

Are the English equivalents the officially accepted version? I feel there is some scope for refinements.

For example, 2. ஆறுவது சினம் means, imho, anger is something that subsides after some time; (so, don't show it immediately - or, control anger is only a derived meaning.) Similarly 8. ஏற்பது இகழ்ச்சி may be more like "freeloading is demeaning." and not "/ 8. Don't freeload."

Since there are many members who are scholarly in Tamil here in this forum, kindly see how we may improve the English equivalents.

BTW, the word ஆத்திசூடி (ātticūṭi) may also be explained as to what it means.

Sangom Ji,Thank you. This was a just a copy, paste of a facebook user page. I wasn't sure, whether I can post the link or not.So, the compliments go to someone-else. Until now, I could find only bits and pieces. When I saw the whole list, I immediately extracted it!All suggestions and comments are welcome, I will edit them.Thanks.

98. மோகத்தை முனி / 98. Hate any desire for lust.
.

Dear Govinda Ji,

I have a question here....is the actual meaning of மோகத்தை முனி.. Hate any desire for Lust?

(My Tamil is not good so I just want some help here).

I know that மோகத்தை முனி literal translation means abhor lust/dislike lust..but
why should one vice (Lust) be replaced by another vice (Hatred)??

Then how to deal with the new vice called Hatred??

I feel the better message should be Conquer Lust.

When we conquer a vice..we go beyond it and there is no need for hatred.

Dictionary meaning of the word Lust is intense desire for anything. It can be for sex or for anything else. Now my doubt is, is Lust a vice? If so why? By the same token intense hunger pangs would also become a vice. won"t it? Just a doubt.

I also don't know if the old Tamil of avvaiyar's times had some specific meaning/s for the word முனி. But, in Sanskrit, I think it emanates from the root 'man'= to think or perceive. In that way முனி may mean ponder, think about what lust is.

First of all, to simply cut and paste something from another source without proper attribution is called plagiarism. Even now we don't know what the source is. I find the claim of ignorance about posting a link quite odd as we see links posted all the time. If there is anything interesting that one wants to share with members here the right thing to do is to provide a link and perhaps, if appropriate, give a brief summary.

Secondly, I find a lot of the translation unsatisfactory, misleading, or outright wrong.

அறிவுடையார் Nara, Firstly, I copied the post (that o.ks sharing) with the wordings 'பெருமை மிக்க நமது ஆத்திசூடியை உலகறியச் செய்வோம். அதிகமாகப் பகிருங்கள். All Tamil people share this to the world.' Secondly, some basic work is done , if there are inaccuracies or inadequacie, they are useful for the society. So, we can always correct them. Thirdly, the link is a facebook famous tamil user, which is a public forum, hence would construe as promoting another public forum thru TamilBramins. Wow! I thought better about rules!

Dear Govinda, the problem is not with sharing, lot of people share a lot of things here. I recently shared news articles by proving a link to them. Look at Shri mskmoorthy's post #7 in this very thread for an excellent example of how to share.

The problem is (1) copy/pasting and (2) not providing attribution. Public forum does not mean we can simply copy paste their content without giving proper credit. Even now you have not provided the Facebook link.

I am just another member expressing my view on how to properly share content from other sites. Please give it the consideration you think it deserves.

Thanks ...

Makes sense..cos I was wondering why would Avvaiyar want to replace Lust with Hatred?

Dear Govinda Sir,

I have written to another friend in our forum to give the sources of the photos he uses but he mentions

'These photos are not mine!'. You could have mentioned 'Taken from FB', as our P J sir does often! :D

Next time. The opening post cannot be edited. I did that in post#3 anyway, immediately when there was a compliment. I lost track of the facebook account (a ocean), if found, will update here.
