மகனுக்குத் நல்ல தந்தையாகவும்;

பேரனுக்குப் பிடித்த தாத்தாவாகவும்;

தம்பிக்கு ஏற்ற அண்ணனாகவும்;

மாணவனுக்கு உகந்த ஆசிரியராகவும்;

மனிதர்களுக்கு அவன் ஒரு மாணிக்கம்;

கோபர்களுக்கு, நெருங்கிய நண்பன் அவன்;

தேவகி வசுதேவருக்கு, நோற்றுப் பெற்ற புதல்வன்;

பொல்லாத கம்சனுக்கு, அச்சம் தரும் காலதேவன்;

யோகியருக்கு, எல்லாம் வல்ல பரமாத்மா;

# 140. Dasa Avathaaram.

Everyday, each one of us play different roles and assume dasa avataarams!

A man is a son to his father; and a father to his son;
a grandson to his grandfather and a grandfather to is grandson;
a younger brother to his elder brother, and an elder brother to his younger brother;
a student to his teachers, and a teacher to his students;
a son in law to his father in law and a father in law to his son in law.

Krishna also appeared to assume different roles in the eyes of the beholders, when he lived on the earth as an avatar.

To all the men in the world, Krishna appeared as a 'gem-among-men'!
To all the women, Krishna appeared as Manmathan.
To all the Gopaalaas He appeared as their bosom friend.
To all the gopikas, He was their secret lover;.
To Devaki and Vasudev, He was their eighth son.
To the wicked people, He was the Dharma Devan.
To Kansan He appeared as Yama Dharman.
To the general public He was a young boy in great trouble.
To the yogis He appeared as Paramaatma.
To the Gnaanis, He appeared as the gnana dhaathaa.

This is how Krishna appeared to the different people when he entered the durbar of Kansan.

# 39. Crocodile tears.

A monkey living on a tree near a river and a crocodile lining in the river were thick friends for a long time. They used to share the jamoon fruits of the tree and spend time together everyday. One day the crocodile wanted to take some of the fruits to his wife. The monkey obliged by picking the best fruits on the tree.

The crocodile was a good hearted fellow but his wife was a she-devil. She liked the taste of the sweet fruits so much that now she wanted to taste the monkey-who had been feeding on these fruits all his life!

The wife argued, coaxed and threatened her husband into submission and told him to bring the monkey to their place on some pretext, so that they can eat him up.

On the next day the crocodile invited his friend the monkey to a feast arranged by his wife in his honor. The monkey never doubted the words of his long time friend and readily hopped on his back.

When the crocodile was sure that the monkey was at his mercy and could not escape, he revealed his true plan for the feast. The monkey was trusting his friend out of faith but he was also very cleaver animal.

"I have washed and hung out my stomach for drying . If you had told me then and there, I would a have given it to you happily. If you take me back to my tree, I can hand it over to you in a second."

The foolish crocodile believed the monkey now and took him back to the tree where he lived. The monkey hopped off its back and climbed to the top most branch of the tree.

He asked the crocodile, "Can any animal remove his stomach from his body while he was still alive?
I do not want to be your friend any longer. You are treacherous and not trustworthy. Go back to your water hole"

The crocodile stood speechless and aghast as he had lost a good friend and the life time supply of the sweet jamoon fruits - all in one stroke.

Moral of the story.
Value your friendship more than the vile words of your spouse.

அதிசயமான அக்ஷய பாத்திரம் ஒன்று;

“நீராடி விட்டு வருகின்றோம், நாங்கள்;

பசி தீர்ந்தது, அவன் உண்ட பருக்கையால்;

# 141. Krishna's hunger.

When Durvaasa maharishi visited along with his 10,000 disciples, Duryodhanan took very good care of them-playing the part of the perfect host.He was secretly afraid that he may incur the wrath and saapam of the short tempered rishi. So when everything went off well, the rishi wanted to bestow upon Dhuryodhanan a special boon.

Any normal person would have have asked for health, wealth, strength, beauty, good health etc but being who he was Dhuryodhanan made a strange request. He wanted to use the boon to get the Pandavaas into trouble with the short tempered rishi.

So he requested that the rishi must visit the Pnandavaas in the forest with all his disciples, when Paandavaas and Paanchaali were resting after their meal. The rishi agreed promptly.

Before the onset of Vanavaasam, Lord Soorya had presented Dharman with an Akshaya paatram. As its name suggested the wonder vessel can produce any amount of any food we desired. But once it was cleaned, it would lose its power for that day. It could produce food only on the next day.

The rishi and disciples visited Paandavaas and told them to keep their food ready and went to take a bath. Paanchlaali was agitated since she had already cleaned the vessel on that day.She prayed to Lord Krishna to help her out of the trouble.

Lord Krishna appeared in front of her and demanded food as He was extremely hungry.Paanchaali was almost in tears- unable to give him food. Krishna took the vessel and found a single grain of cooked rice and a small piece of spinach stuck to the vessel. He scraped them out carefully, put them in his mouth and said,"May the hunger of Sri Hari, the viswaroopan, be appeased"

Krishna was the viswaroopan and so the hunger of every living thing was appeased.

Beema was sent to bring the rishi and his disciple for eating food. But they were feeling so full that they excused themselves and left the place abruptly.

Paandavaas and Paanchaali were amazed at the subtle way Krishna had handled the situation and sent the rishi away without incurring his wrath!

# 40. The common enemy.

A terrific war raged between the animals on one side and the birds on the other! The war was prolonged and the two sides showed signs of winning alternately.

When the birds were nearer to Victory, the bat would join their side claiming that he was a bird too- since he too had wings and he too could fly.

When the animals showed signs of victory, he would hurriedly join them claiming that he to was an animal since he was a mammal and his young ones fed on their mother's milk.

Finally both the parties called off the war on mutual consent. The bat which was changing sides all along and proved to be opportunistic and unreliable became the common enemy of both the birds and the animals.

Moral of the story: It pays to be faithful to your friends and not fickle minded or unreliable.

இடக்கையால் தூக்கி வெளியே எடுத்தான்;

சிறந்த இக்ஷ்வாகு குலத்தின் மன்னன்;

விழுந்தவன் வெகுநாள் காத்திருந்தான்;

பொன் விமானத்தில் ஏறிக் கொண்டான்;

# 142. King Nrugan.

One day, the sons of Krishna Samban, Pradyumnan and others were playing for a long time and became very thirsty. They went to a nearby well, hoping to get a drink of water.

Inside the well there was no water. A large and heavy chameleon was found there. The children tried to take it out of the well, but it was very heavy and unmanageable!

They reported the matter to Krishna. He went to the well and took out the chameleon with his left hand as if it were a toy.The moment Krishna touched it, the chameleon transformed into a young and handsome man-dressed in silk clothes and adorned with various ornaments. He touched Krishna's feet in reverence and related his story.

He was the famous Iskvaaku king named Nrugan.He was famous for his liberal gifts of cows to Brahmans and other charitable services to the citizens of his country.

One day a stray cow got mixed with the herd he had kept aside for gifting.Unknowingly he presented that stray cow to a brahmin.

When the brahmin who received the cow as a gift was leading it away, the real owner came there and demanded him to give it back.

The man who had received it as a gift would not part with it. The king proposed the gift of mare cows and gold coins in compensation for the cow. But neither the owner nor the receiver were willing to come to any kind of compromise!

When the King's end came, Yama Dharman asked the king, "Do you want enjoy the swargam first or suffer the punishment first?" When the king opted for punishment, he was told to "Fall!". He fell down transformed into a great chameleon and waited for deliverance by Krishna's touch.

He begged that his bhakti for Krishna should never diminish. He got into golden chariot and flew off to Heaven.

We may perform an act of kindness with the best of intentions and still end up in a hot spot, due to the circumstances beyond our control.

# 41. A dream come true?

A rich landlord owned several large fertile fields and yet he always coveted for more and more land secretly. He was neither satisfied nor happy in his heart. One night he had a strange dream. He saw a strange man in his dream who promised to gift him large area of fertile land!

Next morning, he met the same strange man in person, near his field. His dream had come true! The man told the landlord, "You may set out at sunrise and all the lands you go round during the day will be yours - provided you come back to the starting point before sunset"

The landlord could hardly believe his eyes or ears. But it was a genuine offer from a king hearted stranger.

The next morning he started dashing like an antelope as the Sun rose in the east. Each piece of land appeared to be more fertile than the previous one. So he kept on running like one truly possessed.

Soon it became a race between the Sun in the sky and the man on the earth! It would be sunset in a few minutes but he would possess all the land he had run around, only if he could reach the starting point before sunset.

He ran straining every muscle in his body. He was out of breath, hungry, thirsty and tired. But the only thought that kept him going was that he should reach the starting point soon.

The sun just disappeared in the west. The man just reached the starting point - only to drop down quite dead!
The stranger was nowhere to be seen.

A man needs one square foot of land to stand upon, two square feet of land to sit upon an six square feet of land of sleep upon.

Why should anyone wish for more than his share of Good Fortune?

Why should he become so greedy that he would rather lose his life than be contented with a little less?

வேறிடம் செல்லார் துறவியர் எவரும்;

அருள்மிகு பிரசாதமாகவே உண்டும்;

பாம்பு ஒன்று தீண்டிக் கொல்லவே;

# 143. Narada's previous birth.

Narada was the son of a poor woman who made her living by serving a few sAdhUs in an Ashram. During the rainy season, the ascetics stay put in a place for four months, as they can't travel freely during those months.

The mother and son took very good care of them. The boy would eat the left over food as a prasAdam. He would sit and listen to their talks on the greatness of God and the miracles He had performed.

He developed sradhdhA and bhakti even as a child, just five year old.The sAdhUs were pleased with him and taught the child the greatness of bhakti and the secrets of spiritual sAdanA.

On day, his mother got bitten by a snake, when she went to milk the cow and died.The boy became an orphan and started wandering wherever his legs would carry him. He would sit and meditate for long hours.

One day he got the glimpse of a divine figure in his mind's vision. He yearned to see it again and again.
Then he heard a voice tell him, "Child! you are not yet ready to see me and be with me. You have had satsang developed bhakti. In your next birth you will become my supreme bhakta and be with me for ever".

When the boy cast of his body, his jEvAtmA rose high into the heavens and entered Vishnu through the air He breathed, along with Brahman. After the long night, when the creation was started again, he was born as the mAnasa puthrA of Barhma and became the thrilOka sanchAri...the great VishnU bhaktA NAradA.

What is the secret behind his transformation from being the son of an illiterate servant woman to a dEva rishi?
It is nothing but his sincere and staunch devotion to Lord nArAyanA.

The kite glides in the sky at a very high altitude. A learned pundit also soars high above the others around him. Yet a pundit seems to be no better than an ordinary man in his spiritual evolution! Why is it so?

Even though a kite flies high in the sky, its vision is always focused on the earth below. It is always on the look out for something to eat!

In the same way, a pundit will be thinking about the awards, rewards and titles he is likely to get and which he strongly believes that he deserves. He never concentrates on God with a pure and detached mind.

"How many persons can I conquer by my debating skill?"
"How many lectures can I squeeze in that short visit?"
"How many people will become my admirers and fans...?" will be his line of thoughts.

But we know that "Words without thoughts will never to heaven go!" With his mind firmly fixed on the world, God has already taken a back seat in his priorities!

His attachments to the world and the worldly recognition in the form of fame, titles and cash rewards, keep increasing with increasing popularity. None can attain mukti without bhakti. The dry knowledge will become a heavy load on his intellect.

Only the persons who remain humble and simple appreciate that God has showered on them everything they have, merely out of His Infinite Grace and mercy - and not because they deserved them.

Such persons will give up ego and sense of possession (ahankaaram and mamakaaram). They will pursue the path to self realization with a detached and calm mind and succeed in their endeavor.

Agasthya maharishi might have been small in stature, but he was greater than all the rishis residing from Himalaya to Vindhya Parvatha put together.

When Lord SivA married PArvathi DEvi, everyone had gone there to witness the wedding of the two Gods. The balance of the earth was disturbed. AgastyA was sent down south to restore the balance singlehandedly.

The Vindhya mountain kept growing taller and taller and was threatening to obstruct the passage of the heavenly bodies. Agasthya crossed the Vindhya and from that time it lies flat, as if prostrating to the great rishi.

Vaataapi and Ilvalan were two rogues who used to kill the rishis by pure deception. They would invite the rishis to eat at their home. The unsuspecting Rishi would accept the invitation.

Vaataapi had a special power that even if his body was cut into a hundred pieces and cooked, he could regain life and get back into his original form.

Vaataapi would assume the form of a lamb. Ilvalan would cut it into pieces and cook. The rishi would eat the meal. Vaataapi would regain his form and life and emerge from the stomach of the rishi, killing him.

They played the same trick on sage Agasthya. When the meal was eaten, the sage digested the lamb with the special powers bestowed on him by Lord Ganesh.

When Ilvalan called out the name of Vaataapi, the sage replied that he had been digested. Ilvalan tried to pounce on the sage in retaliation and was reduced to ashes by a mere glance of the great sage.

Man becomes happy by the sight and smell of the new currency bundles and by the sweet jingle of a purse of new coins!
These make him feel happy, proud and confidant!

Man spends all his life earning money; in multiplying it by wise investments and in spending it with his loved ones in order to make them happy!

We have entered the world empty handed. We will exit from the world empty handed! None of the things earned, saved, bought and enjoyed will come with us to eternity.

The palatial houses built by us, the grand dresses and jewels worn by us, money, coins, luxuries, fancy gadgets will have to be left behind, when the call comes!

We can earn money, give money, take money and spend money only as long as we are alive! Nor for a moment more than that.

The money in the bank is in the custody of the teller. He can handle the money, give it and receive it (obeying the rules of the bank) as if the money were his own! But when he goes home after the working hours, he can not carry even a single rupee of the bank's money with him.

It is time to realize that we are all tellers of THE WORLD! We can handle money as if they are our own only as long as we are in the world. When we leave the world, we have to leave behind us everything that was in our possession and under our custody.

If everyone of us realizes this fact and remembers that we are merely custodians of our wealth and NOT real owners, much of the greed and unscrupulous hoarding of wealth will com to an end.

Let us use the wealth under our custody wisely, without greed for the benefit of everyone around us!

பேதைகள் வணங்கிடும் கண்ணன்;

நித்தமும் காத்திடும் கண்ணன்;

வெள்ளை மனம்கொண்ட கண்ணன்;

He is deliciously sweet to think about,
The thoughts about Him are also sweet;
With His presence the Universe is built,
He who resides in everyone's heart.

He ate the soil quite playfully,
He measured world equally playfully;
He saved pAnchAli from public shame,
His countless miracles sing His fame..

He lifted the mountain Govardhnan,
And protected Gokulam from Indran;
He mesmerized the calves and cow (s),
Every pretty damsel was His Lady Love.

He is the God of Music divine,
A cowherd, walking by the ravine;
Giridhara is the great dharma dhAtA,
Through His gospel of The Bagavat Gita.

The learned men always praise Him,
The illiterate men always worship Him,
The devas and others beings adore Him,
The God of all the Gods-it is always Him.

He becomes the kindest mother,
The guiding and protecting father;
The most dependable elder brother,
To Him who surrender do never bother.

He enjoys eating the stolen butter,
His mind is as soft as the butter;
Can there can be another like Him?
If there is one, I'm yet to find Him!

Seeking His blessings,
For ever and ever,
For everyone here,
Visalakshi Ramani.

Conclusion.

My 185 poems in this collection,
Have reached their completion!

They were just at random penned,
They were not at all preplanned!

I wondered what to do with them!
Those products of worldly wisdom.

Those tense days have gone away,
Pushed by success's gentle sway.

This collection dedicated to my parents,
Has been welcomed by 1000s of persons.

In about months half and seven,
More than 5000 views have been.

The review I got is a good one too!
Can be viewed in my home page too!

Nothing happens unless wished by God.
May be He will wish for another load!

If He does, we are sure to meet again,
Till then please keep reading these again!

With infinite gratitude do I thank,
Those who shared their views frank.

with warm regards and sincere thanks,
yours sincerely,
Visalakshi Ramani.

dear friends,
The posting of all the 185 poems is complete in Tamil.
But there are 49 more poems to appear with their English translation.
Also 40 poems have been posted in different threads. But they too belong here.
So they will be posted here (but not blogged since they have been already blogged)
This thread will continue till they are all posted.
It may continue even further (God willing) with more stories.
This time Lord Shiva will be the hero of the poems :) !
We have neglected Him far too long!
Happy reading!
with warm regards,
Visalakshi Ramani.
