Almost 77% Indian parents expect to live with their sons in old age while 7% want to live with their daughters, according to the India Human Development Survey (IHDS), conducted jointly by researchers from University of Maryland and National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), New Delhi. These are the findings from the IHDS-2 (2011-12) data-set covering a representative sample of 41,554 households across 33 states and union territories in both rural and urban areas. In Haryana, the state with India's lowest child sex ratio (834 females per 1,000 males), 90% of respondents said they would prefer to live with their sons in old age rather than their daughters. Maharashtra was next, with 85% of parents saying they expected support from sons. Sons vs daughters: Many Indians want at least one daughter While 73% of people surveyed said they should ideally have one daughter, 11% said they should ideally have two daughters. While as many as 60% said they ideally wanted one son, 26% said they wanted two sons. Source: India Human Development Survey While more people (73%) want at least one daughter, when asked preferences for an extra child, only 6% said they wanted daughters. The survey was based on indirect questions to test people's attitudes. Some questions asked: How many sons or daughters would they ideally prefer to have? If they were to have an extra child, what sex would they prefer? IndiaSpend plotted the preference for sons as the extra child with the sex ratio across Indian states. Maharashtra has a low child sex ratio (894 females per 1,000 males) and a high preference for a son (39%) for an extra child. Source: India Human Development Survey Sons as support for the declining years The main reason Indian parents prefer sons is that Indians expect to depend on them in their old age. More than three-fourths (77%) of the respondents said they expect to live with their sons when old. Only 16% Indians said they would consider living with their daughters. Source: India Human Development Survey States in the south see higher percentages than national average. Tripura has the highest percentage of parents (72%) preferring to live with daughters in their old age, followed by Tamil Nadu (17%). Source: India Human Development Survey The perception that parents can live with daughters has improved over the last seven years: Asked if they would consider living with daughters, 14% said yes during a previous survey in 2004-05; 16% said yes in 2011-12. Can't ask daughters for money As many as 74% of Indians expect sons to support them financially during old age. Only 18% said they may consider taking money from daughters in old age. from joint families to nuclear families in one generation.

Now nuclear families with parents are breaking up with couple living apart from parents though boys parents like to live with

their sons in preferance to daughter. The main cause for break up is that is economic empowerment of women and working women not

liking to live with mens parents.

It is a matter of time marriage may lose its sanctity and individuals will live together if it suits them on their own terms.

Good we were part of the older generations and lived as a male in patriarchal societies in joint families even upto eightes.

we were fully protected against these female crusaders for gender equality.

Parents prefer daughters as they feel that love & affection of daughter cannot match that of son!

Not all daughters like their parents to live with them for long in their old age . A week ago my aunt came with her daughter for some marriage . This aunt husband died few years back and she is not in good terms with her son and so forced to live with her daughter and this daughter is daily abusing my aunt for staying with her saying that she has lost her personal space and is being a big burden to her and and asked her to move out as soon as possible .

Not 77% but almost all 100% parents want to live with their sons and most of the sons are also prepared to keep their parents with them. But whose is the authority to tell this to sons. Their wives, who never want to keep their in-laws with them. There is the trouble.

Rightly said. Gone are days of joint family norms. Now a days even husband and wife are not able to tolerate or adjust with each other. The individuality has gained the upper hand and it is here to stay. Only those people who understand this could lead a successful marriage life for others live-in is a better option! Welcome - Kaliyugam....

Society evolves by learning from economically advanced societies .

GlobalExposure aided by faster travel and internet and facebook has disintegrated our nuclear families. Our educated

empowered women have destroyed our closely bonded families as it gave a bad deal to women due to ts patriarchal

nature.Women are setting the agenda. I do not know for whose good?.This has made the society violent as a reaction from

a male dominated society.We daily hear /read about rapes/assault on women .

Sir,
I would slightly beg to differ here. We cannot put the entire blame on 'educated empowered women '. How many of us are ready to accept a less educated non working girl as their bride? That way education and empowerment has become pre-qualification for any women to command good respect in the marriage market. Needless to say education and empowerment brings in exposure to independent thinking and own ideologies. Expecting a girl to turn "pattikadu" after marriage after being done all graduation in predominantly advanced style of present day living would be too much for asking. She demands her own place of respect in a married life where her contributions are also equal or second to none. That way it becomes clash between two different views where the husband and her in-laws may want her to adopt their way of life, where as she might be having her own expectations . Right approach would be to understand both opinions and choose the best which we normally wont do. And finally, do you really think the male can still dominate the society? Women of our society have commanded their place in the society and would stay that way in future. Many leaders/heads of countries/states/companies/organizations are women now a days and successfully controls and commands respect from their male colleagues. That change could influence our domestic front also. No body can ignore this fact.
