MADURAI: For around 500 Facebook friends, who met on Sunday at a marriage hall in Madurai, the intention was not only to have a gala time but also about philanthropy. A blood donation camp was organised and donations were made to physically challenged people and old age homes.

The event also saw participation of a few transgender persons, two of whom were even part of the organising committee, which was a gesture to providing equal representation to them.

The blood donation camp was organised in another marriage hall and saw around 52 members donating blood. while donations in form of money and material were provided to physically challenged persons and elderly who are in need.

However, according to ‘Madurai’ Tilak, one of the organisers, the philanthropic activity was not organised centrally with contribution from all the 500 members but instead done by smaller groups of people who planned it among themselves through Facebook.

For instance, a tri-cycle was provided to an elderly physically challenged person by members of a Facebook group called ‘Nanbargalin Nanban (Friends’ Friend) run by a few youngsters in Thanjavur.

Similarly, a refrigerator was provided to an old age home by three Facebook members who go by the pseudonyms ‘Thimiru Pidichavan (hot-headed)’, ‘Adhigam Padikathavan (not-so-educated)’ and ‘Natpudan Senthil (With Affection, Senthil)’.

Members of Facebook groups run by men in places like Tiruchy and Madurai also made appeals to their Facebook friends to contribute for the philanthropic activities they have been doing.

Priya Babu, a transwoman, who is also a writer and documentary filmmaker said, “I was included among the organisers of the event and I took care of the publicity.”

Commenting on the participation of transgender people, Priya said social media has provided a platform hitherto unavailable to discuss the issues faced by transgenders. “While there is still hesitation in interacting with us in real life, the social media makes the discussions easier,” Priya said. “And when we meet them in person in these events, they begin to look at us equally,” she added.
