1.NaaraayaNa who is the Supreme Being can be attained only by devotion through the observance of one's own dharma, the acquisition of knowledge and renunciation of attachment.
2.In the first hexad(6 cantos) the performance of karma free from desire and gnaana towards the practice of yoga are described as the means of realising the self.
3.In the second hexad devotion or bhakthi as a means of attaining exact knowledge of God is described.
4.The last hexad discusses matter in the premordial and evolved conditions, the self and the Lord.
5.The treatise was expounded for Arjuna in the battlefield who had misplaced compassion and confusion between right and wrong when he took refuge in KrishNa.
6.Saankhya and yoga which deal with the eternal self and disinterested activity respectively are explaned in the second chapter in order to remove Arjuna's delusion.
7.In the third chapter the need to perform work without attachment is stressed.
8.In the fourth chapter the knowledge aspect of karma is brought out.
9.In the fifth chapter the ease and efficacy of karma yoga are elucidated.
10.The practice of yoga(concentration and meditation) is described in the sixth chapter.
11.In the eleventh chapter the exact knowledge of the Supreme Being, his concealment by nature, surrender to Him in order to overcome it are dealt with.
12.Three classes of devotees viz.those who desire prosperity, tose who are after the true nature of self and those who surrender at the feet of the Lord are described in the eighth chapter.
13.The supremacy of the Lord, his incarnations,the excellence of great personages who seek only God and discipline of devotion form the subject matter of the ninth chapter.
14.The infinite auspicious attributes of the Lord and His absolute control over everything are discussed in the tenth chapter.
15.The divine eye with which Arjuna could see His form is the subject of the eleventh chapter.
16.The superiority of devotion, the means of practising it, the qualities to be acquired and the immense love of the Lord towards devotees are described in the twelfth chapter.
17.The contents of the thirteenth chapter are: the nature of the body and of the self and the distinction between the two are discussed in the thirteenth chapter.
18.How qualities bind the self and how to eliminate their hold are explained in the fourteenth chapter.
19.The Supreme Being is declared to be other than the self in the fifteenth chapter.
20.Divine and demonic natures are distinguished in the sixteenth chapter in order to clarify what is right and what is wrong in the sixteenth chapter.
21.The seventeenth chapter sets forth taboos and commandments of the Saasthras.
22.The last chapter the need to acquire a tranquil nature and devotionis emphasised.
23.Karmayoga consists of austerities, pilgrimage,charities, sacrifices and so on. Gnaana yoga is the state of purification of self and controlling the mind.
24.Bhakthiyoga involves meditation and devotion to the Lord.
25.All three yogas lead to realisation of self.
26.Discipline-bound devotion, higher love (parabhakthi) and supreme love (paramabhakthi)
are different stages of bhakthi.
27.kaivalya or isolation results from the three yogas.
28.Exclusive aspiration for the Lord leads to attainment of the Lord.
29.The one who knows (gnaani) is one who is exclusively devoted to the Lord.
30.All activities of the senses, intellect,mind,vital forces would then be focussed on Him.
31.One should give up dependence on any thing other than Him.This is the doctrine of prapaththi.
32.The Geethaa is meant only for such a devotee.And this is the meaning of the Geethaa.
