Hello,

We are planning to conduct our son's upanayanam . We belong to Sama veda. One of the sasthrigal we talked to was saying Dhandineer is required for Sama veda. Other sasthrigal said it is not required. Which of them is right?

Also,
My son is not India born? Are there preethi homams required for the function?

Thanks and appreciate your response.

Gopal

Shri Gopal,

"Dandu neer" is supposed to be done as marking the end of studentship of the boy, on day four, who gets cross-belted on day one. Thus all the brouhaha is for a very short study period of four or five days! Is it not better that we do not ourselves make this anti-climax? So, if one Sastrigal says Dandu neer is not necessary, pl. follow his advice.

Since you have requested for response, may I say that Sastras prohibit your son crossing the ocean after upanayanam. He will have to do proper praayascittam etc., after returning to India and then only he will rank as a brahman. So, kindly think about it. Is it not better to dispense with Upanayanam, or else, perform it abroad?
