When Maniachi Station was proposed to be named after Vanchinathan, a rationalist leader who is s still alive protested against the proposal.

I came to know that DK along with some christian group conducted a gathering this year to mourn the death of collector Ash, condemning Brahmanism and brahmins for his death. They claim that Collector Ash was supportive of oppressed castes and it is for this reason that the brahmin vanchinathan killed him. This is the history TN people of future will be taught.

Not sure whether the story about thevar and vanchi's wife is true. What is known is that Vanchi's wife was denied pension normally allocated to freedom fighters and their kin for several years by the then DMK govts. There was a opinion piece on Hindu about this, if I remember correctly.

Here is the relevant article Sir

Dalit outfit pays homage to Ashe

[h=2]“Ashe ended oppressive measures against us”[/h]For the first time in the history of independent India, a Dalit outfit paid floral tributes to Collector Robert William d’ Escourt Ashe, who was assassinated by martyr Vanchinathan at Maniyachi Junction 104 years ago.

“Since this great Briton was against untouchability and recognised the Dalits as human beings even when the caste-ridden society took all-out measures to oppress them, we pay floral tributes to the slain Collector,” justified members of Aathi Thamizhar Katchi.

As Ashe’s suppressive measures collapsed VOC’s Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company that posed a serious threat to the colonial rulers’ maritime interests, Vanchinathan shot the then Collector of Tirunelveli point-blank at Maniyachi Railway Junction even as he was waiting along with his wife to board the Boat Mail.

Within the next few minutes, the young assassin sacrificed his life by shooting himself with the Belgium-made pistol.

You are right sir.

I stumbled upon this article which speaks about the free fighters pension denied.

Centenary of a historical assassination today
[h=3]Pension to his widow[/h]Even after Independence, the widow of Vanchinathan was not covered under the State Government's pension scheme for freedom fighters or their immediate dependents till 1967. It was C.N. Annadurai who, as Chief Minister, had decided to grant pension to her in June 1967, overruling objections.

Vanchinathan: A Powerful Symbol Of Tamil Assertion During India’s Freedom Movement

Snapshot

· Vanchinathan’s sacrifice is an inspiring symbol of Tamil assertion in the interest of our motherland. Several lessons can be learned from his short life.
One among them is that the youth of Tamil Nadu should begin to assert and start shaping their destiny at national and international leve

A couple of years ago, I was presented an exciting opportunity to script a sound and light show for Chinmaya Yuva Kendra, Global Youth Wing of Chinmaya Mission, titled India 2047. The task was to envision how transformed India would look after 100 years of her Independence. During the research for the script, the team came up with an idea to take inspiration from Vanchinathan, the fabled freedom fighter from Tamil Nadu, in one of the scenes. The team, though born, bred and brought up in Tamil Nadu, had no inkling of who Vanchinathan was, nor knew anything about his struggle, contribution or family. We knew nothing about him until we decided to showcase him to the youth through this sound and light show.

Tamil Nadu and India marked Vanchinathan’s 107th death anniversary yesterday (17 June). If there is one young revolutionary, who epitomised Babasaheb Ambedkar’s quote, “Life should be great rather than long,” then Vanchinathan it is.
