Why Sterlite-like protests are inevitable in India

The anti-Sterlite protest in Tuticorin is not the first in which citizens have taken on a company on the issue of pollution and human rights. It won’t be the last either, unless corporations learn to follow India’s green norms and respect human rights, and, more importantly, the State implements the laws in letter and spirit.

Sterlite Industries,a copper product manufacturing company, is owned by Vedanta Resources Plc, a London-based natural resources company. The mother ship was in the news a couple of years ago, thanks to similar violations at Niyamgiri, the site of bauxite mines, and also at its bauxite refining and aluminium smelting plant at Lanjigarh, both in Odisha.

Tuticorin and Niyamgiri-Lanjigarh have made it to the national headlines, but there are several ongoing low-intensity community protests against mining companies that we don’t even hear about. For example, last week, residents of the Dabal gram panchayat at Margao, Goa, which has iron ore mines, protested against mining companies for polluting their water and air, and the State for failing to do address this.

One has to just log on to the Environment Justice Atlas (https://ejatlas.org/country/india) and count the number of ongoing conflicts between the people and the State/companies in India. Most of these protests are borne out of the nagging feeling that people have got nothing while they have paid a high cost of mining activities. In the last one year, tribal communities of mineral-rich Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh have revived a traditional movement (Pathalgari), demanding control of natural resources from the State. As expected, both states view the protesting tribals as criminals, missing the moot point: the trust in the State to bring development and ensure justice — similar to what protesters in Tuticorin must have felt — is fast eroding.

The State, however, has enough institutions, laws and funds to counter such apprehensions of the people. But more often than not, it fails to use them judiciously and effectively, leading to an atmosphere of distrust.

India is not China, we have political parties and people who demand Human rights.

Eamilnadu is in forefront for all protests.

They protested about a nuclear plant in kudankulam which they stopped after enjoying power from it to light their homes.

They do the same with sterlite plant and yet are happy as it employs many locals.

They are violently reacting to ONGC pipelines but are happy to have subsidised gas from it.

They are up in arms about privatising lignite plant in neyveli and also like the state with power surplus with no power cuts.

It must be the only state where people go to court for flimsiest of reasons.

It appears they take to the streets protesting any affirmative action by the state govt.

They wear black badges / shirts and become part of any protest on daily basis.

Many household helps join the protests to make an extra buck.

They are paid well by political parties .

Those who live on govt doles of free rations, food have no need to work for a living.

Where is a State which does not face protests by the public in India…?

Where is a State which does not have a factory that deals with chemicals which is considered hazardous like Union Carbide, etc

In fact every State has its own headaches

Most of the State’s general public avail all freebies offered liberally by the State Governments concerned and comment on other States performance. This is routine in this site and the Headquarters of this site is located in Tamil Nadu.

Protesting peacefully is a matter of right of every citizen

And there is an elected Govt. to maintain law and order.

And what one is sure is that everyone is closely watching Tamil Nadu which speak volume about its growth

There are statistics to prove that Tamil Nadu is in forefront in most of the areas

It is Tamil Nadu which had the tremendous growth in GDP in recent years.

Of course, people with poor GK may not be knowing all these. LOL

P.S: Most of us would not have forgotten the protests held at Delhi University and the reported police brutality, Courts intervention, etc

Tamil Nadu 'Jai Ho'.

Most of these protests are funded by NGOs who receive aid from Western Countries. This is to block the development of India.

I agree sir,

Look at this news report ...

Foreign-funded NGOs stalling development: IB report

36382290.jpg

NEW DELHI: An Intelligence Bureau report has accused "foreign-funded" NGOs such as Greenpeace, Cordaid, Amnesty and ActionAid of "serving as tools for foreign policy interests of western governments" by sponsoring agitations against nuclear and coal-fired power plants across the country.

The NGOs, said to be working through a network of local organizations such as PUCL and Narmada Bachao Andolan, have negatively impacted GDP growth by 2-3%, claims the IB report sent to the PMO and other government agencies.

Environmental activists joined Greenpeace in rubbishing the IB report. Greenpeace said it was a conscious attempt by the country's premier intelligence agency to crush and stifle opposing voices in civil society. The organization also wrote to the home minister, requesting him to share a copy of the report "to know and understand impacts of this labeling".

Rich IT/MBA professionals have fled tamilnadu for better pastures leaving third rates behind. These are no better than ordinary graduates. TN school finalists have performed

the the worst in NEET ,Kerala, AP,karnataka being ahead.

Standards of education in Anna univ patronised by locals is very poor and suits only rural folks from reserved category. These engg graduates are used by IT majors for sub

standard work and are paid a pittance.Very few of them can make it to IITs or IIMs.

Reservation policies have killed academic excellence and promoted mediocrity.

Delhi univ ,AIIMS, IIT delhi,JNU , Jamia univ ,Amity cater to a wide spectrum including mediocre and brilliant.

Anyone interested in education can always find an option.

The fact is...
Tamil Nadu emerges as the Mecca of higher education in the country

Excerpts..

But such an even distribution is restricted only to the top echelons. When one takes the top 100 rankings the picture that emerges is completely skewed. Right at the top is Tamil Nadu which contains one fifth or 20 of the top ranked institutions, which makes it the Mecca of higher education in the country. Next comes Maharashtra which had about a tenth or 9 of the top 100. Third ranked state was Karnataka with as many as 8 of the top 100 ranks

[h=1]How IIT Madras beat all the odds to become India’s top engineering college[/h]The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M), the country’s best engineering school, according to the government of India, hasn’t had it easy. Not by a mile.

The engineering college, which topped this year’s National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) of India’s human resource development (HRD) ministry, has received much bad press for issues as varied as its canteen food and purported caste bias on campus to alleged subversive activities by students.

Yet, IIT-M has managed to get its “basics right,” observers say. While the NIRF ranking considers a gamut of factors, academic and research categories hold the maximum weightage, they say.

“What should an engineering institute do—I think they’ve got that right. Rather than doing fancy stuff, they keep it simple so it is easy to achieve,” Narayanan Ramaswamy, a partner and head of the education practice at consultancy firm KPMG in India, told Quartz.

I have personal experience of Guindy engineering college and IIT madras.

Kanpur IIT is considered number1 in the country among the IITs.

My children who were products of CBSE pattern topped in Guindy engg college. The academic standards were such that they they easily topped. The academic staff were mostly

rejects from industry and since they could not get job placements , they did PG and became academic staff.Over the years, they became associate prof and professors.

I do not think highly of Guindy engg college.Private colleges are only money making vehicles. Many could not get students ready to join them and had to close down. The

picture is dismal.

On the one side we talk about industrialization for more employment opportunities and on the other we are serious about environment etc.

Scince has taken over the world completely and we are forced to live with it. We cannot, in any way, go backwards.

Is Sterilite Industies really a dangerous one for human survival?

The protests engineered by the groups indicate some other thing. It seems this is the first time religion has played certain role in issues like this.

Guindy Engg College does not represent the entire State of Tamil Nadu

It is highly ridiculous to measure the entire State's Academic performance based on one Engg. College at Guindy.

There are top class private Engg. Colleges like

(1) Vellore Institute of Technology at Vellore
(2) PSG College of Engg. Coimbatore
(3) Thiagarajar College of Engg., Madurai
(4) Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore
(5) Sastra University, Thanjavur, etc etc are really doing well.

Not interested in continuing the discussion, as it is nowhere near the topic.

Is Protesting always wrong?

Remember we won Freedom from the British using that method.
I agree States like West Bengal have lost millions of development and jobs because of Excessive protesting and the government supporting this kind of subversive actions.

But there has to be legitimate opposition to high handed action by a corporation and their "agents: in government.
Without this check and balance, the workers, and citizens will be exploited.
So there is room for legitimate protest.

The people of Tuticorin have been protesting against Vedanta’s Sterlite copper unit for its adverse impact on the environment for quite some time. This protest took a bloody turn recently when 13 protestors died tragically when the police fired on the crowd.

Since then, as reported, allegations and counter allegations have been made that the UPA government or the current NDA government (or both) interpreted environmental regulations in a manner that allowed Vedanta to operate and expand the copper plant without holding public consultations.

In 2016, the National Green Tribunal struck down orders issued by the NDA government in December 2014 that gave companies like Vedanta a free pass.

Then on May 23, 2018 – just a day after the police firing and bloodbath – the Madras high court ordered the Vedanta Group to stop the expansion of its copper unit. Finally, on May 28, 2018, the Tamil Nadu government ordered the permanent closure of the plant. Whether this closure order will stand legal scrutiny in a court of law isn’t known yet.

Apart from these legal complexities, however, this case also provides an opportunity to revisit the relationship between governments and businesses in India.

[FONT=&quot]In order to restore the confidence of the people, as Raghuram Rajan, borrowing from American political scientist Francis Fukuyama, has argued, the edifice of the Indian Republic needs to stand on four pillars: a strong government (efficient and fair administration that provides access to quality public/social goods including health and education); democratic accountability; rule of law (independent institutions and laws that impose limits on the state’s exercise of public power and comes down heavily on anyone who cheats on the system); and free-markets (providing equality of opportunity for economic empowerment to all citizens based on skill and hard work, not patronage, political or otherwise).
