India’s cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has donated his entire salary and the perks he received as a Rajya Sabha MP to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund, according to a communication from the Prime Minister’s office on Sunday.

Tendulkar’s six year term in the Upper House will come to an end on April 26. He has earned more than Rs 90 lakh in salary and allowances in the past six years.

The PMO also issued a letter of acknowledgement which states: “The Prime Minister acknowledges this thoughtful gesture and conveys his gratitude. These contributions will be of immense help in providing assistance to the persons in distress.”

Apart from a salary of Rs 50,000, MPs earn Rs 90,000 in allowances. The salary, however, is taxable. The cricket icon’s office also released data showing that he sanctioned 185 projects across the country with Rs 7.4 crore, out of his allocated Rs 30 crore, deployed towards educational and infrastructure development.

Tendulkar also adopted two villages under the Sansad Gram Adarsh Gram Yojana Scheme, including Puttam Raju Kandriga in Andhra Pradesh and Donja in Maharashtra.

It seems he has political connections.

His name was recommended for Bharata Ratna from the sports category well ahead of more deserving personalities like Viswanathan Anand and Dhyan Chand.

What was his contribution as a member of Rajya Sabha? How many days he attended and in how many debates he participated.

As per the data released from his office, he sanctioned 185 projects worth 7.4crores across the nation and utilized MP Local Development Fund efficiently. Apart from the same, he also used Rs. 30 crores for educational and structural development which also includes building and renovation of classrooms.

Yes, he could have done more. He could have solved the Water problem in India. He could have solved the poverty in India. He could............
But he did more than many of us could do, he did much more for the prime minister's fund than any other current member. There is much to be admired.
He is a human, not a god.

My post#2 was not a rejoinder, Chandruji.

A good thing about nomination of high profile persons like Sachin Tendulkar and Rekha to the Rajya Sabha is that it will bring into focus the role and responsibilities of Presidential nominees to the Upper House of Parliament. Under article 80 of the Constitution, the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) is composed of not more than 250 members, of whom 12 are nominated by the President of India from amongst persons who have special knowledge or practical experience in respect of such matters as literature, science, art and social service. By adopting the principle of nomination in Rajya Sabha, the Constitution has ensured that the nation must also receive services of the most distinguished persons of the country who have earned distinction in their field of activity, many of whom may not like to face the rough and tumble of the election. In last 60 years, nearly 115 members have been nominated to the Council of States, who have been reputed scholars, jurists, educationists, historians, scientists, poets and litterateurs, engineers, economists, administrators, artistes and social workers of proven ability and outstanding merit.

Sachin is perhaps the first sports-person to be nominated in this category. Purpose of these nominations is not the felicitation of distinguished persons from various fields, as several other government awards like Padmas and Khel Ratna etc have already been constituted for the same. These awards are eagerly aspired by many, who also fiercely lobby for it. The main and the only objective of these nominations has been to provide space to distinguished persons from different fields in the country’s law-making process. The nominated members, who possess outstanding merit and distinction, in fact, add to the importance and dignity of Rajya Sabha. It is expected from them to make it truly a House bestowing calm consideration on measures of national importance.

The nominations obviously indicate the political preferences of the ruling party/coalition so as the political inclination of the nominated persons. It is heartening to know that Sachin, in a way, has distanced himself from parochial outfits like MNS and Shiv Sena by accepting the offer made by UPA government at the Centre. However, it is a common understanding that such personalities should not be active members of any political parties, and must rise above the political partisans in the House of the elders.

It is important to ensure nomination of non-partisan members to the Upper House, however, it is equally important to pin down their accountability with respect to their performance in the House. Unfortunately, many of the nominated members have dismally failed to take up issues of their respective fields in the Rajya Sabha. Few of them, for example Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshakar, have shown utter disrespect to the proceedings of the Upper House by remaining absent throughout most of their tenure. Hopefully, the God of Cricket will show similar passion and sincerity in the Rajya Sabha as he has demonstrated on the cricketing fields all over the world since 1989, and will at least bat for better sporting opportunities for India’s youth that constitutes more than 50% of country’s population.

His rejection of offer from MNS and Shiv Sena and acceptance from Congress clearly shows his political liking.

Awards must be given to the most deserving persons, both nationally and internationally, irrespective of fields. Overlooking really deserving persons and favouring persons with high level connections will bring only disrepute to the award. His extended cricket career did not bring anything special to Indian cricket, except diminishing in his batting average, both Test and One Day levels, and forcing cricket fans to cry for retirement.

Though Viswanathan Anand was the youngest recipient of Khel Ratna and Padma Vibhushen from sports field point of view, Bharat Ratna went to another sports person due to pull and pushes. This was also very well debated in the English channels.

hi

in india....every thing is politics....from ram mandir to cauvery water.....all five elements are polluted and politicised....

It is never ending controversy as far as Bharat Ratna award is concerned.

MS was the first recipient of this award for music when Internationally acclaimed musicians like Pandit Ravi Shankar, Bhimsen Joshi and, of course, Lata Mangeshkar were around.

There will be bias in each and every selection.
Rama did bias in selecting Sugriva over Vali.
Krishna showed his bias to Pandava over Kaurava.
Vishnu did sneakily preferred Devata over Danavas.

So does human being.

Gandhi never Got the Nobel Peace Prize, but King, Mandela, Obama, Malala got it.
Go figure it.
