[h=1]On one hand, it’s nice to have great military ability to challenge the enemy, but it is also important to have more striking intellectual quality to deal with the enemy at war front without much loss of precious human life as at war front, the focus is only on defeating the enemy..[/h][h=1][/h][h=1]Military education is need of the hour[/h]“History of the world is largely a history of warfare” – John Keegan.
War is such a dominant feature of human history that most modern nation states and the nation-state system itself came into existence through or because of war.
India is a notable exception as far as the freedom struggle is concerned, but we more than made up with an internecine civil war that left half a million dead, and which even today defines half of our national security problems. It goes without saying that the military which advises the government on national security and executes the use of force, must be manned by men who are highly educated about their profession and trained to execute the missions assigned.
This brings us to the proverbial question of the difference between military education and training. A difference, not understood even by most militaries. Intellectual military education deals with the “why” of matters military and involves a wider study of the evolution and theory of war, military history, military technology international relations and current strategic issues.
Grounded in the art of war – the soldier’s culture – an educated officer must understand the guiding concepts of his profession, why are they held to be true, and how they came to be evolved. He must be able to put whatever situation he faces into a larger context of military history, theory and soldier’s behaviour in combat. The development of an ability to think logically under the stress of combat, must always be a fundamental objective of military education.
