Haj pilgrims will no longer receive any subsidy this year onwards, with the government saying the decision is part of its agenda of empowerment of minorities without appeasement.

Union minister for minority affairs
Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Tuesday confirmed that the Haj subsidy has been withdrawn.

A policy to withdraw the Haj subsidy had been drafted in light of a 2012 Supreme Court order asking the Centre to abolish it gradually by 2022.

Most sensible thing done by this government, even if it was forced by SC.

I wonder if its a good move to end Haj subsidy.

Instead why dont give Hindus ..Christians and Sikhs
subsidy too for pilgrimage to their pilgrimage centre of choice?

For eg those who want to attend Kumbh Mela can be given subsidy for transport and accomodation cos transport and accomodation is expensive.

But only one time subsidy should be given.

Strange move to remove Haj subsidy...vote bank might be affected .

On technical grounds ending hajj subsidy might seem like a move for enpowerment sans appeasement..agreed.

But Politics is not all about being technical.
Its about some handouts to keep everyone happy to prevent inter religious tension.

Instead of ending subsidy totally a reduction in subsidy would be a better move and the money channeled for education of children both boys and girls equally.

The Government should stay out of religion. India is a secular country.
Then again only giving subsidy to a small group for Religious travel is wrong.
So this decision is right.

Then again this has been a pet peeve of the majority.

While the Central Government may with guts withdraw the subsidy paid to Haj Pilgrims

But, there are State Governments ruled by different parties offering subsidies to pilgrims to visit Manasarovar

In fact Karnataka Government ruled by Congress Party offers subsidy for pilgrims visiting Manasarovar.. and is trying to extend such offer to Chardum pilgrims.

Each Party has different policies... and this is India
