Shared by @ShefVaidya. This is what Shefali Vaidya had to say:

A reader, Ranjitha Krishnamurthy sent me this picture of this wonderful Rangoli by her mother. I can't take my eyes off it! Such beauty, such precision and such complex lines!!

Beautiful indeed. "Kolam" is a tribal art to decorate the house and surroundings. In olden days I have seen the entire roads are filled with nice "Kolams" drawn before each house.
I hope this talent is revived again.

This tradition is maintained even now in Tamil Nadu! Just happened to see these snaps from the Mylapore Kolam Competition! Awesome!!

A fresh glorious artwork everyday in front of your house. What better way to decorate one's house and welcome everyone than this.

Having been born with tradition, I am very familiar with it.
The tradition Kolam is being replaced with Rangoli and modern artform.

I am little bit confused taht sometimes they have writings, and some other times they have Ganesh, Hanuman, or other religious sysmbols. They are so big that you can not skirt around it and you are forced to step on it. I do not like that. What is the best way to avoid stepping on them or I just ignore it?

I have rarely seen men draw kolam even though many men are experts at drawing Rangoli here.

Mostly women draw kolam..any reason?

Just for Info.
I agree that somehow it is gender specific. I did learn Kolum from my mom.

Similarly Traditinally women do all Mehendi. Then they had to perform in the secluded area of the house which was only open to women.

But now a days both genders become professional Mehendi artist.
