Hollywood spoke with one voice at the Golden Globes to declare war on the film industry’s culture of sexual harassment and abuse. The industry’s elite turned the red carpet black for the Globes, the glitzy launch of Tinseltown’s awards season, in a fashionable repudiation of disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein and others ensnared in allegations of misconduct.

Billed as the most raucous event in the showbiz calendar, the champagne-drenched Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual prize-giving is a draw for filmmakers and actors looking to create some buzz ahead of the Oscars in March.

But this year’s ceremony, seen as the first big opportunity for the industry to unite and deliver a message about how Hollywood can move forward, struck a more serious tone.

“Speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have,” actor and media powerhouse Oprah Winfrey told the audience at the Beverly Hilton as she accepted a lifetime achievement award. “For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up,” she added, earning a standing ovation.

Actors turned out in black in solidarity with victims of Weinstein and numerous other figures exposed by the harassment and abuse scandal, including Kevin Spacey, Brett Ratner and Dustin Hoffman. And the overall message was a call for continued change.

“People are aware now of a power imbalance. It’s led to abuse in our industry. (...) It’s everywhere,” Meryl Streep, who is vying for a Globe for her work in media drama The Post, told E! network on the red carpet.

Fellow Oscar winner Viola Davis added: “It’s all of these women just embracing their authentic voices and standing in solidarity with each other.”

Not to say I dont support women..but in the show biz many women willingly sleep their way to the top.

Many actresses date establish actors/ directors..sleep with them for films too.
Some even end up breaking up marriages...the male too is to blame here.

The directors and actors too have their share of favors and fun too.

Its all part of the game.

All.these females will do these when they are young and famous...once they become older and less famous all will scream sexual abuse!

Then they will spill out all raunchy details to get a book deal and launch a book " the director/actor who gunned me" and pose there in fish net stockings in an aged body stating " I am not afraid of the Big Bad Wolf"

I dont fall for all these gimmicks.
If they once played the game of sex and deception..dont play the victim card.

Thats why I respect porn actresses..they come..they play..they conquer...you never hear them complain.

Btw actors and directors too should start complaining alleged abuse by actresses who try to seduce them for sex.

It was about a decade back, maybe more. After a friend, let’s call her A, recounted her scarring casting couch experience, I decided to ask one question over and over again. Over the next few months, my interviews of people associated with the movie industry would have one stock question: just how blatant and pervasive is casting couch in India? The answer I received is probably why, even after all those years and in the face of Weinstein-gate, nobody is ready to talk about sexual harassment in the Indian movie industry.

Men and women, stars and aspiring actors, young and old, they all had the same answer: nobody forces you to sleep with someone, it is your choice to do so. As Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein’s systematic preying on women has revealed – there never is a choice. Like A, whose ‘no’ to a predator ensured her career ended before it began.

It started with her being called by a casting director who wanted her to enact a rape scene having invited her home late evening. Sensing something was off, she made her excuses and left but not before she was warned about what this may mean for her career. The warnings were true enough – the film industry doesn’t like people speaking out. For an industry which thrives on publicity, it is determined about keeping its skeletons in the cupboard. Casting couch has probably been its worst kept secret and the sexual harassment continues.

Sadly people misunderstand Sexual predation for sexual choice. Or worse still accept as the norm. It is not.

Excellent and well said. In order to deal with real sexual discrimination phony charges need to be confronted

The French actor Catherine Deneuve has sparked a furious international backlash after she denounced the #MeToo campaign against sexual harassment as a “witch-hunt” against men.

Deneuve and around 100 other women had signed an open letter blasting the new “puritanism” of the avalanche of “denunciations” following claims that the Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein had sexually assaulted dozens of women.

In an angry riposte, French feminists described the letter’s signatories as “apologists for rape” and “defenders of paedophiles”, a reference to Deneuve’s vigorous support of the French-Polish film director Roman Polanski, convicted of raping a 13-year-old girl.

“There’s nothing really new in the arguments they use; they’re like the embarrassing colleague or tired uncle who doesn’t understand what’s happening,” a group of feminists wrote in an open letter of their own to French radio.

Rape is a crime, but flirting, even persistently or cack-handedly, is not – nor is men being gallant a macho attack,” read the letter, entitled: “We defend the freedom to importune, indispensable for sexual freedom.”
