    A temple for Yama sounds death knell to caste war

    THANJAVUR: At a time when caste rivalries and hate killings rule the roost in many parts of Tamil Nadu, non-dalits have helped build a temple for dalits in a Thanjavur village. And as if sounding the death knell to caste violence, the temple is dedicated to Yama, the lord of death.

    More than 200 dalit families residing in Thiruchittrambalam village near Pattukottai in Thanjavur have been maintaining the more than 1,000-year-old temple. As the structure made of limestone began to crumble gradually, they decided to construct a new one. A committee was formed for the purpose and the dalits started mobilising funds on their own. "Our village heads decided to construct the temple 20 years ago but that remained a dream for almost 15 years as we could not raise the required funds," said R Stalin, 40, a resident of Thiruchittrambalam.

    "On coming to know about it, villagers across castes came forward to extend a helping hand. We have now raised enough funds to meet the estimated cost of 3 crore." Stalin said.
