It is an auspicious function for lord subramanya. Every year the full-moon comes on star "PUSHYA" in this month and the day is celebrated for lord muruga. Though it is not much celebrated as a home-based function, this grand function is celebrated in temples in an excellent manner.

Being a sthalam for "Guru", this temple is also famous for Thai poosam (The devatha for poosam itself is GURU). In thiruchendur thaipoosam is celebrated as day when muruga receives "vel" from parasakthi.
The Thaipoosam celebrations are also famous outside tamilnadu like singapore, malaysia, mauritius, etc.
