Job offers for fresh management graduates in India are at a five-year low, official data show, a trend experts blame on a sluggish economy as well as a mismatch between the years-old curriculum and industry expectations.
In 2016-17, just 47% of Master of Business Administration (MBA) graduates got placed on the campus, a dip of 4% over the previous year, marking a five-year low. At 12%, the drop was far sharper for postgraduate diploma holders (see graphic).

The data does not include the premier Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) that are not affiliated to the main regulatory body, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). There are an estimated 5,000 management institutes across the country. About 200,000 students passed out of these institutes in 2016-17.
The trend has AICTE officials worried.

Unless these so called Management graduates excel in soft skills there is no hope for them!!

I wait with bated breath for the next big disruption in the market.

Let us see how the market is going to behave when the robotics and artificial Intelligence which are in the gestation phase bloom.

MBAs and PGDMs will have to go and man the billing counters in Supermarkets and be happy with that.

MBA is a most highly overrated degree. Profitable only for the management colleges.

Yes sir,
MBA courses in IIMs cost a fortune. Very expensive. Not approachable for ordinary people who are quite intelligent but not rich. This exclusiveness has created a new Caste division of haves and havenots. Even a small drop in campus recruitment is highlighted "as a worrying trend" by media. No other degree holder gets this unique privilege of job offer when they come out of college.
It is time the Government should intervene and regulate the working of IIM.
