'Who is beautiful, Kerala or Tamil women?': 'Neeya Naana' topic has us scratching our heads
The topic may be 'entertaining' but should a TV show normalize the objectification of women like this


Vijay TV's Neeya Naana, hosted by anchor Gobinath, has often come under controversy for the views expressed on the show. This time, however, the topic itself has drawn flak.
Vijay TV has been promoting the show's topic thus: Who is more beautiful? Kerala women? Or Tamil Nadu women?

The promo is rather bewildering. The all women show has one side dressed in traditional Kerala dress and the other dressed in Tamil Nadu's attire. From women pretending to cuddle a baby (?!) to arguing about why they were superior to the others, the topic certainly appears to be the most ridiculous chosen in recent times.



It's possible that the topic was triggered because of 'Jimmiki Kammal' fame Sheril and her popularity in Tamil Nadu, which prompted discussions on similar lines on social media. However, should a popular TV show take this objectification one stop ahead and normalize it?

The channel is even running a poll on social media. "Kerala women? Or Tamil women? Sunday afternoon at 3 pm on Neeya Naana." It has got thousands of votes.
As counselor and psychotherapist Veena Jagadeesh has put it, writing on Facebook:
"For the people who say " learn to laugh at yourself, chill, when women themselves can discuss this so nicely, what is your problem?"

Unfortunately, that is the problem. In the name of jokes and fun, we are allowing such subtle discussions, which doesn't serve any purpose. And I am only hope that women get strength to not laugh at themselves on such cheap topics.

Well...TRP targets will be achieved for sure, as this is an "entertaining" topic. So this becomes a "chicken or egg" situation!

Now, another question will be...if this program is doing an episode on men "Kerala men or Tamil Nadu men - who have got better six packs and who look more handsome?" , Will I protest?

I will. And you should. Because objectifying any gender is not ok.


The show is yet to be aired and it is perhaps premature to go hammer and tongs at it. But can there be a sensible discussion on such a topic? Ever? If yes, we'd be very surprised.

Taking to Facebook, the director of the show, Anthony, lashed out at 'leftist feminists' for stopping the airing of the episode.
Vijay TV decided to not air Neeya Naana’s planned episode for Sunday, on the topic ‘Who is more beautiful?: Kerala women or Tamil women.’ The decision was taken following a police complaint against the show, according to director of Neeya Naana, Anthony. Though Antony claimed that a police complaint had forced them to drop the show, it is unclear if the call was taken earlier owing to protests. The channel had deleted the Twitter poll and Facebook promos on Saturday evening itself.

Other than the objections on social media, a group called Manidhi approached the police. Another group based out of Kanchipuram called Makkal Mandram asked for action against the makers of the show under the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.

Taking to Facebook, the director of the show, Anthony, lashed out at 'leftist feminists' for stopping the airing of the episode.

Anthony wrote, "In the show, Kerala women and Tamil women spoke personally and publicly about the beauty of their clothes, beauty of their jewellery, beauty of their leadership. Their voices have been muzzled this time by leftist feminists. They have got a stay through the police that we shouldn't speak about women's beauty at all. Why are they creating noise without even having the patience to listen to these college girls? Demanding a ban before a show is even released - what is the difference between religious fundamentalists, casteist fundamentalists and these leftist fundamentalists?"

Entertainment should not only be light but also be not insulting to anyone in any way. It is safe to not be critical of one's beauty or brains but safe and right to be critical of one's level of goodness.
 
Beauty is only skin deep! But seldom people agree and 'look' for beauty ONLY!! ;)

Is it not true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder?
 
Controversies increases the popularity - be it a T V channel, a movie, a politician, a cine actor, a musician and as the like.

Some make use of it, to gain attention!! :spy:

I prefer to go to deeper level of beauty...that is who is more Handsome..Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu?
 
For Kambar, Lord Rama was the most handsome personality in RamAyanA.

He writes:

Meaning:

Those who saw Lord Rama's shoulders could NOT move their eyes - such was the beauty!

The women who have sharp eyes like swords, could not see His full beauty!

They were like those who could not see the full beauty of the Almighty, who exists since the time unknown to us!
 
I think, at the level of Almighty, body, mind and soul all become attractive to the same extent because they exist at the same level.

So for you its a Keralite brahmin.

For another it might be a girl from Latin America/ Africa/Far East etc.

But if we can relate to this song..then we know true beauty.

It becomes a fashion in Tamil Nadu from some sections to speak high / glorify people of other States. Hence, the debate proposed is not a surprise. Fortunately, the telecast was stopped.

Sometime back a popular actor who is a Tamilian and belonged to Kumbakonam, acting in Tamil and Malayalam films, made a rubbish comment about Tamil women in an interview to a Malayalam channel. He faced strong condemnation from Tamil outfits and later apologised.

Except some communities like Dalits, overall, Tamilians are not showing enough affiliation to the language and culture. The perfect example is Tamil movies. Almost all heroines and some heroes are from other States.

Is it due to the rise of non-Tamilians occupying prime positions in Politics and other fields and sidelining Tamil Brahmins?

The latest addition is the rise of Chandi Melam, which is a Kerala product, in place of Nagaswaram in functions.
