Chetan Bhagat asks why Supreme Court is targeting Hindu festivals, gets schooled by Tharoor.

"SC bans fireworks on Diwali? A full ban? What’s Diwali for children without crackers?" asked Chetan Bhagat

The Supreme Court has banned the sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR till November 1, and will take into account the impact it will have on air quality.

With the sale of crackers being banned in Delhi NCR, Twitter exploded, with an equal number of people who supported the decision and an equal number of people who said that it should have been regulated, but not banned.

Diwali usually elicits comments from celebrities, many of them pleas to people to not burst crackers, or not to add to the pollution during the festival.

The pollution problem is more on account of burning paddy and diesel vehicles...The crackers is just a one or two day phenomenon...We cannot forcefully change the habits of people!! Already there is a talk that SC Judges are anti Hindu...Is this required??

I think we shouldnot see a religious angle in this decision. Those three days, one day prior and after Diwali is really a nightmare. People with chronic diseases and young children are the most affected. The awareness campaign done during the past years have not yeilded any result. But still only sale is banned. Possession or burning of crackers is not banned. People who have already procured could burn and on that pretext others too. So how effective is the ban is what is remains to be seen..

I agree with your post.

Everything is not religious. If you see the total pollution created in India, it will be mostly due to Hindus as Hindus are in majority. But that is not religion. Probably Muslims create more pollution as generally, they are poorer.

In USA a large number of municipalities ban personal fireworks on 4th of July.
Only communal fireworks are allowed. It is for safety reason.

Why cant there be Diwali sans firecrackers?

Its so much noise and dangerous too.
Its irritating to hear firecrackers..I affects animals too...they become agitated.

Btw firecrackers isnt even Indian culture ..its Chinese culture to scare away ghosts.

I guess ghosts like..The Sound of Silence.

Out here very few play fireworks during Diwali and its kind of frowned upon cos there is actually a ban for every festivals including Eid..Chinese New Year but some break rules.

Diwali as originally meant is festival of lights. Even if you argue, what is Diwali with out crackers. There are many safe things available that they can burst rather than Atom Bomb, Rocket, Aeroplane, Sometimes Tharai chakram which bursts. Even Sattai also some times burst. Therefore it is better have a safe Diwali, With a long vatthi or long kambi mattappu. I do not know English for all these is safe. They can allow these type of things instead of banning everything. They should strictly say that children should not burn some vedi in hand and throw it outside or sara vedi which is exceeding 1000 or 2000 wallahs.

Some Twitter reactions by Chetan Bhagat

Banning crackers on Diwali is like banning Christmas trees on Christmas and goats on Bakr-Eid. Regulate. Don’t ban. Respect traditions.

Diwali one day a year is causing disorders? Or unchecked polluters who pollute everyday?

It is one day of the year. Our biggest festival. Uber has saved pollution more than any ban would. Come up with innovations. Not bans.
