Survival of fittest..?

Diversity and Survival of fittest are the hall-marks of intelligence evolution in our Universe.

Diversity means ability of variety of organisms with different capabilities, survive on each other, mutually dependent on each other and create a complex web of mutual survival. Diversity is the fundamental basis for driving sustainable evolution of intelligence.

In saMkhya parlance, Diversity is the 'sattva' guna that is laghu and Prakasham.

Mass/Momentum differentiates different matter and beings and creates their diversity. Laghu is this buoyancy or momentum. It also determines the impact of matter and beings on 'space' (light/heavy etc). Thus it creates diversity of matter of beings.

Radiation (prakAsam) enables organisms to radiate, absorb from each other, thus make them interact and mutually dependent. This interaction ability further promotes diversity. This differentiating momentum and interaction ability that causes diversity eliminates single-point failures, makes the whole system more robust.

Survival of fittest means organisms having ability to stay put or move fast in responding to environmental changes to retain their sustainability.

In saMkhya parlance, it is the 'rajas' guna that is 'calam' and 'upasthambakam'

Survival of fittest is the ability to stay, support, the potential to grow, upasthambakam. It is also the ability to move fast, flow and adapt like a fluid/water that flows, calam. It is the kinetic. This potential and kinetic manifests as survival of fittest ensures traits to survive in different environments get developed.

These Sattva and Rajas gunas, Diversity and Survival of fittest have to go together to have sustainable evolution.

Assume we have only diversity, say matter or organisms lack the potential to stay put or kinetic to adapt, then annihilation will happen too fast and evolution will not be sustainable.

Assume we have only survival of fittest then single point failures eliminate the survivors, and intelligence evolution will also not happen, as interaction does not happen.

Some times survival of fittest is quoted for being 'profit-minded' at the expense of everyone else in a business.

Being profit minded in businesses is good. Profit-earners can be the one's who channelize the profits to society to create more diversity. They do that by investing in more businesses. Though businessmen may not like it, as business expands, their own investment creates competition for them and diversity for industry as their investment in a sector or industry makes it more attractive for others to come in and compete.

Assume this profit is hoarded by an individual for few individuals to be spent later, then for sure the business will perish. It is just a question of time. Either businesses grow (in capabilities, in service objectives etc, not just in size) or they perish.

Many times people quote 'survival of fittest' as the reason individuals or society being extremely self-centered, using dubious means to achieve their goals.

A society cannot survive only on survival of fittest. It has to have diversity. It has to promote diversity, wherein different beings, strong and weak at a given time are able to survive together, mutually dependent on each other.

As environment changes, strengths and weaknesses in a society changes. What was hitherto a strength becomes a weakness. What was hitherto a weakness, becomes the strength. Strong one suddenly becomes weaker and weaker one becomes stronger. Thus this diversity of taking everyone together helps the society as a whole.

Thus Diversity and Survival of fittest have to go together in a society.

So, next time, let's not quote 'survival of fittest' to justify our self-centered nature.

Survival of fittest works in nature, because diversity is default promoted in nature. A lion that hunts, leaves the rest of the food for jackals, crows and vultures. It does not store in its refrigerator. That is diversity going along with survival of fittest.
