Temple in Chennai area boon for childless couples
Chennai: For G Radhakrishnan, a resident of GKM Colony, at Villivakkam in the city, his day is not complete till he pays a visit to Sowmya Damodara Perumal temple here.
“I have been visiting it for the last five years,” he says. Similarly, for Mayurnathan from Srinivasa Nagar, performing special rituals here during Navarathri is a must. “I come here on all the nine days,” he states.
There are many across Villivakkam like them, for whom, this shrine located near the bus terminus on Reddy Street, is a part and parcel of life.
Said to be one of the most ancient holy places in the city, the temple has over the years, become one of the area’s identities.
Speaking about this, Prabhakara Sastrigal, who resides near the temple, says, “This is said to be in existence for well over 650 years.”
Sources say, sage Athri’s son Dhurva married Asuvamukhi (Surapadman’s sister). Their two sons Ilvalan and Vatapi became demonic and troubled everyone. Sage Agasthya, known for his strength and valour, destroyed them and restored peace. Since this sage killed (‘koll’ in Tamil) them in this place, it also came to be known as Konnur.
“Sowmya means beautiful. In Gokulam, Yasodha tied Lord Krishna to a grinding stone (ural) and called him Damodaran. Since He looked bewitching tied to the stone, He was called Sowmya Damodaran. Damodaran is one of the 12 names of the Lord,” Sastrigal explains.
The Moolavar here has a scar in His stomach which is apparently due to the rope tied by Yasodha.
It may be noted that devotees throng the temple during the Brahmotsavam which occurs in the the Tamil month of Vaikasi.
Special events here include Chithra Pournami, Rama Navami, Gajendra Moksham, Pavithrotsavam, Krishna Jayanthi and Navarathri. Thayar Purappadu takes place every Friday with oonjal sevai, while the Thota Utsavam takes place during the Thai month.
The Goddess here who is known as Amirthavalli, is housed in a separate shrine to the right of the sanctum sanctorum. Apart from this, there are shrines for deities Rama and Krishna, Andal, Anjaneya and Azhwars.
It is said that the Lord here blesses childless couples.
