Good one Gopalan Sir, Don't know how many of us in this forum celebrate Onam, I do it and enjoy a great feast on that day!!

Born in Kerala, I and my family celebrate Ohnam (ചിങ്ങമാസം തിരുവോണം) yearly, dearly.

Sri K Gopalan apparently does not know, or deliberately omits, the truth that Emperor Mahaabali (മഹാബലി ചക്രവര്ത്തി) does not ascend to Earth from Rishi-lokam Paataalam alone, but is escorted and accompanied by Bhagavaan Sree Mahaa Vishnu Paramaathma.

The celebration is therefore a double one: in honour of Mahaa Vishnu and in honour of the beloved and deeply cherished former Emperor.

(In order not to offend the Swahilians and the Arabic/Malay lovers in our midst and in order not to attract another red-ink warning of "Inappropriate language" from teamtb, I shall not give here the greeting in Malayaalam that we natives joyfully sing on this rare occasion. Sad.)

hi

ATHAM PATHONAM...means from HASTAM TO THIRUVONAM...TEN DAYS FESTIVAL...I ENJOYED MY CHILDHOOD IN KERALA...

even we brahmins celebrated in palakkad agraharam....its kerala's state festival....ten days school holidays in kerala...

any way...HAPPY ONAM...

Onam is an ancient Hindu festival of Kerala that celebrates rice harvest. The significance of the festival is in Hindu legends, of which two are more common.
1. Mahabali
2. Parsurama.

The festival is also celebrated by Christians of Kerala, in its churches. These traditions, according to Selvister Ponnumuthan, start with the lighting of Nilavilakku, an arati that includes waving of flowers (pushparati) over the Bible, eating the Onam meal together with the Hindus as a form of "communion of brothers and sisters of different faiths". The significance of these practices are viewed by some Kerala Christians as a form of integration with Hindus, mutual respect and sharing a tradition.

Some Muslim Indian politicians light traditional vilakku (oil lamps), while others have refused to light these lamps at Onam events declaring it to be a Hindu tradition and against the teachings of Islam. Muslim daily newspapers and other publications have condemned Muslim ministers who participate in Onam traditions. However, some Muslims observe Onam anyway, considering its celebrations and rituals as a cultural practice.

So overall it is a social function and not a religious function.

Onam season is often associated with creativity as weavers and potters go for excess production to cater to increased demands for their products during the season, especially in North Kerala regions of Kannur and Kasargod. Handloom fairs are an integral part of the spirit of Onam festivities these days.

In some parts of Kerala, people indulge in various games and dances during and post-Thiruvonam. These are known as Onakkalikal. These include competitions such as Ox races (Maramadimatsaram), Uriyady, food-eating competitions, Pookalam competitions etc.

Kerala seems to be better integrated than most states in India.

The McDonald’s spin-off of the Onam Sadhya has left most people puzzled on the Internet.

Dear Sri Zebra 16

aapo vaa annam: (T.U.).

The fried chicken leg served on the banana leaf bottom lefthand corner is annam to you? And the two fish "bajji" pieces on the middle righthand corner?

What a surprise!

Might well be annam to the two ladies you named in your e-mail to me as non veda-haters.

To me, the spread was just disgusting and insensitive to Kerala Brahmins and other vegetarians. And a cruel mockery and cheap caricature of the true Ohnam sadhya celebrated by us.

Dear Sir..

I am vegetarian..so I cant accept the leg piece and the fish bajji and neither can the other lady member accept it cos she too is vegetarian.

Annam btw means food...Annam does not only mean Shakahaari.

Annamaya Kosha of the body is build from food.
It does not say Shakahaarakosha.

If you read Manusmirti you will see a whole National Geographic Discovery channel of every animal possible from Ruru Deer..Spotted Deer..Black Antelope to be made as offering..also cows meat..buffalo meat..

So Annam included meat too.

Dear Renu,

Iyer Sir has recently entered forum; so he will NOT know the interactions you and I had, earlier.

Do you remember our conversation, when I wrote that I can't tolerate any person near me eating a plate of N V stuff? :hungry:

I think, those who do not have any idea how to prepare vegetarian Onam sadhyA, will easily order food from McDonalds.

When Jesus Gayatri mantram has come into existence, why NOT an Onam sadhyA with McDonalds stuff?? ;)
