Not a tragedy, itís a massacre: Kailash Satyarthi on Gorakhpur hospital deaths

Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi expressed his outrage at the death of over 60 children in Gorakhpur’s Baba Raghav Das Medical College’s hospital due to alleged lack of oxygen, saying it was not a tragedy but a clear case of massacre.

Taking to Twitter, Satyarthi tore into the Uttar Pradesh government asking “is this what 70 years of freedom means for our children?”

“Appeal to CM @myogiadityanath Ji. Your decisive intervention can correct decades of corrupt medical system of UP to prevent such incidents,” he added.

Meanwhile, chief minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a thorough probe into the matter and assured strict action against those who were involved in the alleged shortage of oxygen supply in the hospital.

Abslutely right! A clear cut massacre! No words are enough to condemn the carelessness of the authorities. Each one of them should be taken to task and given exmplery punishment.

At least 60 children have lost their lives in the last five-days at the state-run Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh due to various reasons, among them infections arising out of encephalitis. The deaths have prompted the BJP-led state government to order a magisterial inquiry into the incident. The deaths are being blamed on infections and possible disruption of oxygen supply in medical wards. But the hospital staff has rejected oxygen shortage as the reason.

    So what is encephalitis?

Encephalitis is a potentially life-threatening but rare disease causing “acute inflammation” of the brain. According to the Medical News Today website, the term “acute”, in medicine, is used when a disease appears abruptly and grows at a fast pace. A person afflicted with encephalitis requires serious medical attention.

My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families in Gorakhpur. It is indeed an irreparable loss. It is alleged the lives of many innocent babies were lost due to the scourge of "Encephalitis", the disease is spread by pigs living in unclean surroundings. The state Government has instituted an enquiry commission under a Magistrate. Let us wait till their report is out, before starting the blame game. Punishing the guilty is legal action, but spreading the importance of cleanliness is the need of the hour. Not politics. Let all political parties join in spreading the news.

Now a days it is common to see hoards of stray dogs and filthy animals like pigs roaming free in the open areas of elite suburbs even in cities like Bangalore. The concerned citizens have brought this to the notice of health department of Corporation often, they also take sporadic action, which is not enough.

We have to understand why our PM insist on Swacch Bharath .

Is WORDS ever expressed in action? Having a photo opportunity holding a broom is not enough.
Swacch Bharat needs action on the ground. Agreed one Modiji alone is not enough, he can only do so much.

Yes. Agreed. It is my view huge amounts spent by central and state Governments on publicity in news media is waste. The amounts spent on these will not bring required results . Their reach is limited to educated class. These amounts can be utilised for building more public utilities.
Word of mouth on successful implementation of schemes is the best publicity.

It is shocking and saddening. May be due to gross negligence on the part of the authorities. Whoever found guilty should face stringentpunishment.
