Nirbhaya gangrape: SC upholds death sentence for Jyoti Singh's rapists and murderers

No mercy for Jyoti Singh's killers, said the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence awarded to four men convicted of gang-raping and killing Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student in Delhi, on December 16, 2012. The fifth adult accused had killed himself in prison during the trial, and the sixth accused, a juvenile, was convicted by another court and sentenced to three years.

The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan gave two separate judgments in the case. Justice Banumathi wrote a separate judgment. However, she also concurred with Justices Misra and Bhushan over upholding the death sentence.

Noting the "diabolical" nature of the crime, the court said the mitigating circumstances warranted no merit. Evidence brought in by prosecution was sufficient and clinching in nature, the bench said. They also said that the CCTV footage submitted was correct.

Death' is the maximum punishment court can give in this case. Considering the gravity of the offence this is too little a punishment. It took 5 long years to go this far. Don't know how many years more will pass before this judgement gets implemented.. delivery of justice is too slow. Nothing much is changed post this incidence. If TV reports are to be believed around 33000 rapes per year were reported after this incidence till to day.. Criminals don't fear much..

Yet another case...which drew the attention of the nation..

[h=1]At 19, She Was Gang Raped & 14 Of Her Family Members Were Killed; Yesterday, She Got Justice[/h]On 4 May, the Bombay High Court held all 20 accused in the Bilkis Bano case as guilty
  • It rejected the appeals of 11 convicted accused in the case.
  • It upheld the sentence of life imprisonment for the 11 convicts.
  • It also quashed the acquittal of seven accused, pronouncing them as convicts; these seven had been previously acquitted by a trial court.
  • The HC also convicted many doctors and cops for evidence tampering.
  • The Court also dismissed an appeal by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to award the capital punishment to three of the 11 convicts.

The HC’s verdict marks a major legal and personal victory for Bilkis Bano, whose struggles and fight for justice captured the conscience of the nation.

Awarding death sentence to rapists does not end rape.

Only change of mind set of people can.

When people cannot accept women in open public space and give them respect and equality , there is no hope

Perhaps many parents may talk radical thinking and write a lot abut upbringing of children ... I mean responsible children for the society.

But in practice people who talk lot dont follow.

For more, it is just a pass time to come the preach others

Bcos it is the quite easy thing to do.lol

Read Justice Bhanumathis judgement on Nirbhayas case.

A judicial system which takes more than four years to reach the highest level and award a judgement with still some options left for the convicted sends a clear message.

Neither police nor courts can give women sufficient hope to feel safe in public space.

Equality and gender justice have to get inculcated in children from school level.

We discriminate against girls in households.

Parents are the first culprits .

Are there courts to try them?

Many female kids are molested home by their own relatives or someone known to them.

Most get covered up for family honour.

Many social sites carry stories of such real stories by victims themselves.

True..we have death sentence for drug trafficking here but yet it does not stop drug trafficking.

To be frank we cant wait for mindset to change..in fact it might never ever change.

So best is to look out for potential danger in every space..public or confined.

Transparency brings some dangers along with it.

We have huge mast lights in every colony intersections for lighting.

We have installed CCTVs at all possible places[ which are there to see only after molestation for clues and not preventive]

Smart phones, Aadhar etc only lead to people tracking you including your bedroom[Big brother is watching you.]

We are all losing our privacy in name of safety.

It is difficult to be a girl/woman in india.

The fellow next to you could be your molester.lol
