This mystical Hindu sect is known for extreme rituals. Reza Aslan explores the facts and myths behind this religion.

A religion where nothing is untouchable

Believer with Reza Aslan
An offshoot Hindu sect called Aghora wants to get rid of the caste system that identifies some people as "untouchable." Explore the world's most fascinating faith-based groups on CNN's "Believer with Reza Aslan," premiering Sunday, March 5, at 10 p.m. ET.

I knew nothing of this sect. Raza Aslam's episode on CNN created a buzz on facebook. Many condemned it, but there are people who question UD PIO's about it.

The video is very graphic and may be objectionable to some. Do not watch it with children, or if you are Squamish. Yes I know ReZa Aslam is a Muslim and has not criticized Muslim religious practice.

There is little doubt this has Hindu-phobic/xenophobic intentions. See the response:

hi

aghori is part of lord shiva worship....in hinduism....mainly three kinds worship sects...MANDRA....YANTRA..TANTRA.....CALLED

SATTVA WORSHIP ...RAJAS WORSHIP....TAMO WORSHIP.....OTS INDIVIDUAL CHOICE...HINDUISM MAINLY BELIEVE IN INDIVIDUAL

WORSHIP/SADHANA....its democratic worship system.....very inclusive system of worship....its different from western thought..

some of the shiva/sakthi worship based TANTRA....AGHORS DO A LOT OF TANTRIC WORSHIP...

AhamkAra comes with Identity. Identity arises because we differentiate beween beautiful (a-ghora) and ugly/terrible (ghora). To lose identity one has to lose the sense of differentiation, sense of disdain and disgust and treat everything as same. One has to recognize that everything is Aghora, everything is shiva, everything is energy. If one can live in that undifferentiated state, they can said to be living like a para-brahmam.

Every being has a sense of identity. The intellect (mahat) brings this identity because every person has some combination of gunas which is different from others. With this identity, every person acquires Ahama-kAra. All worldly duels come out of this Aham-kAra.

In the Aghori way losing Aham-kAra or identity is by losing this sense of disdain or disgust. It is to appreciate everything is beautiful, everything is Aghora.

To reach this undifferentiated state of a being, which is very difficult to achieve, Aghoris have practices like eating corpse, feces and even take naturally occuring drugs. The practices of Aghoris evolved over a period towards reaching this undifferentiated state. We can just hope that their practices stay on the path.

Judging Aghoris by our standards of living is of no use. We can have difference of opinion with them in their ways and methods. But that's it. Let them live their way.
