No one seems to care and consider the fate of these tipplers….. result .. now they have a demand…

Tipplers demand de-addiction centres

Chennai: After Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami’s move to close 500 more Tamilnadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) liquor outlets in the State, tipplers and alcoholics seek de-addiction centres to be opened at the earliest – as promised by the government.

They say they cannot sustain without a product they have been addicted to for so many years.

The highlight of last year’s Assembly elections was the promise for either implementing complete prohibition or prohibition in phases. The ruling AIADMK back then promised prohibition in phases and soon after winning the elections, the then chief minister J Jayalalithaa ordered the closure of 500 shops in the first phase.

At the time, Jayalalithaa also assured the opening of de-addiction centres. But tipplers say not even one centre has been opened by the government so far.

President of Tamilnadu Tipplers Association, Chellapandian, told ‘News Today’, “It is almost a year since the new government took charge but till now, not even one de-addiction centre has been opened. In fact, that was one of the late Chief Minister’s promises. Had she been alive and healthy, many centres would have been opened by now.”

He says alcoholics need adequate time to come out of the addiction. “How can someone stop something all of a sudden which s/he has been doing for the past few decades? If they do, it will affect the addict physically and psychologically. Reports have also emerged that stopping alcohol consumption all of a sudden can lead to major complications in the body.

Without addressing all these health issues, the State government shouldn’t close shops. They should think from our point of view as well.”
