Last week in one of the Tamil TV Channels there was a discussion/debate titled 'Thamizh kalaachaaram seerkedugiradhaa?'

One of the elements of culture they were pointing out mostly was dress worn by youngsters.

One of the panelists, a protagonist for thamizh panpaadu claimed that wearing of jeans and invasion of northern and western dress was cause of 'kalaachaara seerkedu'.

He also maintained that 'kalaachaaram' is wedded to Tamil language and he mentioned many points from 'silappadhigaaram' etc.

The defendants were maintaining their standpoint and viewpoint mostly by saying, 'evolution and change is a part of every culture and so is tamil culture.

No one ever defined in finer terms with vivid examples 'what is thamizhar panpaadu'. jallikattu was also dragged in owing to the season and also the numerous debates in media on its ban.

IMHO, jeans and t-shirt is worn as casual dress outside of home for the simple reason that it is the most convenient dress, especially for travel in trains and buses.

With a veshti (or paavaadai dhaavani for women) it is difficult to travel in trains and buses, especially pallavan bus when it is crowded with people on footboard.

For women, the most comfortable dress is chudidhaar kameez as formal dress when travelling to office.

The discussion also centred around, among many other things, on adulteration of tamil language with foreign words viz Sanskrit, hindi, English etc, on food habits of tamilians.

I can hardly understand how evolution and change to comfortable styles of living is an erosion/deterioration/decay of thamizh panpaadu. Someone please explain.

Moreover there are numerous practices of yester-centuries tamilians which we do not follow. We are not even aware of many.

is panpaadu/kalaachaaram only about dress, festival and food habits?

The protagonist was speaking as if exclusive Brahmin practices are alien to thamizh panpaadu.

One of the panelists even rebuked the conservative protagonist saying there is no such thing as Aryan-dravida divide, that Aryan refers to race and dravida refers to a geographical area.

what are the unique/salient features of thamizh panpaadu and thamizh kalaacharan?

how can tamil language influence panpaadu/kalaachaaram?

I humbly request forum members to confine discussion to 'thamizh panpaadu' and 'thamizh kalaachaaram' and not to digress to Aryan/dravida divide or greatness of tamil language literature. thanks in advance.

hi

this culture /panpadu changes.....time to time...we are not SANGA KAALAM......even we are not talking as sanga kaala tamizh...

so every culture/language has influence of GLOBALISATION.....still we are not using TAMIZH as like SRILANKAN TAMILS....

JAFFNA TAMIZH/SRILANKAN TAMIL CULTURE/LANGUAGE FAR BETTER THAN OUR OWN CHENNAI/TAMIL NADU TAMIZH....its

my observation....many times ...foriegners/pulam puyarnthu tamils follow the proper tamil culture/language...

In Tamil Nadu we give lip service to Tamil or Tamil culture...It is Tamils in Malaysia, Mauritius who are following our culture

can't agree more with you sir.

it is true the way we speak tamil has changed. there are numerous dialects and accents in tamil languge varying with districts, with communities, generations, people groups, class etc.

but the question is 'has thamizh panpaadu' become extinct? has 'panpaadu' decayed, eroded, degenerated among thamizhargal?

People who talk in Tamil and study in Tamil medium schools are looked down upon by the society;

but there are talk shows about 'Thamizhar paNpAdu'!!
:ballchain:

:noidea:

There are so many versions of spoken tamizh including brahmin tamizh.

Even in tamil mythological films, Gods speak classical tamizh while some others speak tamil as spoken in modern tamilnadu by NB castes.

I remember one member was hounded here for writing in chennai tamizh.

Then there is delhi tamizh, which is tamilhindi tamil mixed with hindi.

Tamilinglish is very common everywhere.

All this about panpadu is all gas.

Whipping up emotions of people utilising language, river waters sharing or jallikattu as issues is work of persons who are doing no good to society.

Dear Mr. Gnana sunyam by opening this thread, you have just opened the gate for the members who are totally ignorant of either Tamizh or Tamizhar Panpaadu to comment adversely imho.

If you would have opened this thread in Tamil Language, these elements would not have made entry..... :)

GOOD POST என்று பாராட்டுகிறார்.

Dear Gnanam Sir,

The elders in a family are responsible to inculcate good values to the youngsters in their family. If they themselves

don't follow any of the traditions, how can the youngsters learn?

In Singarach Chennai, all the Tamil festivals are celebrated in the traditional way. Recently, we had the Pongal festival

for three days. It is difficult to follow the traditional dress while going to study or work. But, on special days, people like

to wear them and keep up the tradition. Only that much is possible in modern times. :)

Our culture in followed on special days in many of the Tamil NRI families living in the U S of A. There are organizations

like Bala Vihar in which children are taught slOkams and bhajans; children know the Indian culture very well. Annual

events are conducted and children participate enthusiastically in all the cultural activities.

Sadly, Tamil is almost an alien language to many children because parents don't encourage them to talk or write in Tamil.

But I met a few families in which children talk chaste brahmin Tamil! :thumb:

Tamils are under stress as they believe in rule of law.

They feel bad that neighbouring states do not honour river sharing award.favouring tamilnadu.

They feel bad tamil fishermen are treated badly by sri lankans due to kachatheevu being given on a platter to srilanka harming their interests

They think Tamil eelam cause has been betrayed by govt at the centre.

Now this jallikattu issue.

So bottled up grievances all have burst into a movement.

Andhra handled similar issue of jallikattu, cockfight etc by ignoring supreme court and keeping police away.

Karnataka ignored supreme c ourt on cauvery and kerala on mullaiperiyar.

Since TN govt got over active with police force, this outburst took place.

Writing in tamil does not make anyone holier than the other tamils.

Majority in tamilnadu feel that brahmins do not respect tamil culture.Sansksrit is their language.

They may promote their version of brahmin tamil which they make fun of.
