Earlier in the evening Apollo hospitals, Chennai, in its bulletin said Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was on extracorporeal membrane heart assist device following her cardiac arrest.

What exactly is ECMO, Wikipedia provides the answer:

'Also known as extracorporeal life support (ECLS), it is an extracorporealtechnique of providing both cardiac and respiratory support to persons whose heart and lungs are unable to provide an adequate amount of gas exchange to sustain life.'

Wiki further says: 'This intervention has mostly been used on children, but it is seeing more use in adults with cardiac and respiratory failure. ECMO works by removing blood from the person's body and artificially removing the carbon dioxide and oxygenating red blood cells. Generally it is only used in the later treatment of a person with heart or lung failure as it is solely a life-sustaining intervention.'

Jayalalithaa's health: What is ECMO?

On Sunday, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was shifted back to the Intensive Care Unit of the Apollo Hospitals, exactly a fortnight after she was moved to a private room. She was put on an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) heart assist device that aids cardiac and respiratory functions.

Here is a brief explainer:

# ECMO stands for ExtraCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

# ECMO is used as a life support system in some patients who suffer a cardiac arrest — it is used as a rescue therapy when the patient is found to be unresponsive to conventional CPR measures

# An ECMO machine works by draining the blood from a vein, adding oxygen and removing the carbon dioxide. It also warms the blood and then returns it to the artery and in some cases pumps the blood through the body. This allows the blood to bypass the heart and lungs.

# Specifically, ECMO is resorted to in situations where it can be rapidly implemented and where the attending medical personnel believe that the suspected cause of the cardiac arrest is potentially reversible

She indeed is the leadera of masses. May God bless her with a speedy recovery. Alertness of the State administration seems unprecendented.

Situation is grave as per Hospital authorities..Private Companies have asked employees to go early today

Jayalalithaa's Health Update: A Doctor Explains Her Condition

Dr Sameer Gupta, Dr Sonia Lal Gupta | Updated: December 05, 2016 17:43 IST

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had a cardiac arrest last evening at Chennai's Apollo Hospital, where she has spent over two months being treated for a serious respiratory illness.
Here, a doctor explains her condition based on the information available

  1. A heart attack occurs when the blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked. This causes classic chest pain, ECG changes and other features seen in a heart attack. If not promptly treated, the area supplied by the artery dies. Doctors call it "a plumbing problem."
  2. But in a cardiac arrest, which is what Jayalalithaa's doctors have reported, the heart stops beating suddenly and unexpectedly. It is triggered by an "electrical problem" in the heart. With the heart not pumping, there is a loss of blood flow to the brain, lungs, and other vital organs of the body.
  3. A heart attack increases the risk of cardiac arrest. Other causes of cardiac arrest are thickened heart muscle, heart failure, electrolyte abnormalities and other abnormal heart rhythms.
  4. Patients with sudden cardiac arrest require immediate CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) that includes chest compressions and supportive drugs till the body's internal rhythm stabilizes.
  5. Some patients can make complete recovery after a cardiac arrest. The recovery is dependent on multiple factors like the baseline condition of the patient, the duration of CPR, the amount and duration of hypoxia.
  6. The Chief Minister is now being treated with Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation. ECMO, as it is commonly referred to, is a temporary mechanical support system used in patients with severely compromised heart and lung functions.
  7. There are 2 main types of ECMO - VA or Venous-Arterial ECMO in patients with both respiratory and cardiac compromise, and V-V ECMO in patients with respiratory failure whose lung function is compromised.
  8. Deoxygenated blood is withdrawn from the body via a cannula or thin tube inserted into a vein and passed through the circuit where the blood is oxygenated and then returned to the body using another cannula.
  9. ECMO is used as a supportive mortality in patients where the disease process is reversible, those awaiting heart transplant or a long term cardiac assist device.
  10. It is also used as a temporizing support in patients after a cardiac arrest while the cause of cardiac arrest is determined and treated.

No leader in recent history has commanded so much of people's affection. Always going to be difficult to control people's emotion. A rumor spread in the evening has already caused severe damage. More measures required to maintain law and order.

Heartfelt condolences. May her soul Rest in peace.

In a statement issued after midnight on Tuesday, Apollo Hospitals said: "It is with indescribable grief we announce the sad demise of our esteemed honourable chief minister of Tamil Nadu Puratchi Thalavi Amma at 11.30pm today (5.12.2016). Our honourable chief minister Selvi J Jayalalithaa+ was admitted on 22.9.2016 with complaints of fever and dehydration and underlying comorbidities. It said, "Unfortunately the honourable chief minister suffered a massive cardiac arrest on December, 4 2016, even while our intensivist was in her room. The honourable chief minister was immediately administered resuscitation (CPR) and provided the ECMO support within the hour. ECMO is the most advanced treatment currently available internationally. Every possible clinical attempt was made to sustain her revival. However, despite our best efforts, our honourable chief minister's underlying conditions rendered her unable to recover and she passed away at 11.30pm today (5.12.2016)."

"Every member of the Apollo Hospitals family, the clinicians, the nursing and paramedical staff have strived hard to provide the highest standards of care to our beloved chief minister. My condolences to Forum members from TN.
May JJ rest in peace.

I just hope people in TN dont get over emotional and start fights and committing suicide...they should think of the soul of the deceased and not get carried away beyond limits.

Recently Fidel Castro passed away and Cubans were emotional but yet composed and what I liked about him is that he made it clear before death that he wants no road to be named after him..no building..no monument ..no nothing cos he did not want a cult following.

May Amma's Atma get Shanti! Heartfelt condolences!! JJ was a People's CM, a brave lady, a sincere & passionate leader, literally a giant who strode TN Politics!!
