Why camphor is shown to deities after archana?

In my opinion it must be to have the dharshan of Almighty in Garbhagraha as only a lamp might be glowing a little far from there inside Garbhagraham. The Archaka will take this Deepam with camphor from top to bottom of the vigraham in order to have His glimpse face and His padhams as well. In Kudumiyan malai the Archakar will show the head portion having Shikha in the lingam and explain, narrate the history to the devotees who are new. Now a days I think, in some temples the Deepam with ghee in a lamp is preferred as it is not a smoky flame. Persons who might have read if any special, salient features of Deepam with Camphor/ Deepam with Ghee lamp in Agama Sasthras may throw some more light on this topic.

Camphor represents our soul. Therefore in order to surrend ourselves by sacrificing our I mentality we are doing this. That is make yourself nothing before god and surrender fully.Ghee lamp also related to soul only.

[h=1]What is the significance of Hindus burning camphor and incense sticks (agarbatti's) during religious rituals?[/h]camphor fumes purify the environment. They kill the bacteria viruses & other microbes.
Camphor or Karpooram is a part of every aarti, puja , house warming or Agnihotra . The flame of Camphor is Lord Shiva’s flame of consciousness. It burn without residue. Camphor crystals ( karpooram) and match box are used for lightening the cow-dung cakes in Agnihotra. Camphor is made in 6000 year old Ayurveda by distilling the bark and wood of the camphor tree – the mighty evergreen Camphor Laurel, ( Cinnamomum camphora ) tree.White camphor is a crystalline substance using the formulation C10H16O which is a fantastic anti-oxidant. As per Ayurveda Karpooram can control geno toxicity which affect in the genetic level. Its stimulating action affects secretion and excretion.

It decreases the harshness of nervous disorders as well as convulsions, epileptic attacks, nervousness, as well as chronic anxiety. No wonder Hindus feel good after a puja. There is amazing improvement in attention, ability to concentrate, hand-eye coordination and short-term memory before an exam.

Like grains when properly planted in soil produces 100s of seeds, liquid when mixed with water becomes 1000 times more effective .In the same way when a substance comes in contact with fire element its becomes many times more effctive.Women might be knowing that a pinch of spices when used in cooking , by coming in contact with fire ,its smell spreads out through the neighbourhood & brings water to the mouth of people.

In the same way during mantra chanting, when we light lamp it doesnot mean we are illuminating God's place & He will be pleased & if we dont light he'll become angry .When you light lamps the effect of chanting on environment spreads out far & wide. When we do yagya along with chanting, mantra becomes more effective. The seed is small but when it gets the support of the Earth, manure & water that seed takes it energy from them & becomes a large tree & produces millions of seeds.

Pure camphor will not emit black smoke!

Now a days only the adulterated camphor is available and it is better to avoid burning them in temples.

Please read this, written way back in 2000:
Tamil Nadu temples shy away from adulterated camphor

''Chennai, June 4: The south is becoming wary of camphor. It is time for commodity manufacturers to take note,

the temples are moving away from the puja ingredient due to adulteration. Unscrupulous vendors are now mixing

hexamine, which has the burning properties of camphor, but is carcinogenic and produces smoke. Unable to identify

the spurious products, some temples have banned the use of camphor to protect the deity and others. There are no

benchmarks for packaging camphor. Though Indian manufacturers have established methods of processing and

extracting camphor, the thousands of tiny industries which buy the product in bulk for tableting, mix it with adulterants

or inferior Chinese camphor to short circuit costs. Many do not opt for the ISI mark as small industries are not prepared

to invest in the testing equipment required for getting the necessary certification. Nor are the bulk manufacturers willing

to run such testing labs for the sake of the small industry.''

Having worshipped the Lord with love, lit by the lamp we see the beauty of the Lord in all his glory. The singing, clapping is associated with the joy that accompanies the vision of the Lord.Aarti being performed with Camphor has a spiritual significance. Camphor burns itself out completely without leaving a trace. Camphor represents our Vasanas, unmanifest desires. So also if we were to take refuge in the Lord, obtain knowledge, these desires will get burnt out. Al though the camphor burns itself out, it emits a nice perfume. On a human plane it means that we should sacrifice ourselves to serve society, in the process spread the perfume of love and happiness to all.
We close our eyes while performing the Aarti as if to look within. The Self or Atman is within us. . Self realization can be achieved by knowing thyself, with the flame of knowledge. At the end of the aarti we place the hands over the flame and touch our eyes and top of the head. It means that may the light that illumined the Lord light up my vision, may my thoughts be pure and beautiful.
With the Aarti comes the flame which signifies light. There can be light in our lives only if we have knowledge. In an era of darkness there would be ignorance, we would be perpetually running to fulfill our vasanas resulting in unhappiness and stress all around.

A philosophical moral of the burning incense stick is that, just as it burns away to ashes while simultaneously pervading the air with fragrance, an aspirant should sacrifice his life to serve others and mould it such that its fragrance inspires others.

What is the purpose of showing camphor todeities after archana and neivdya? Nowadays in many big as well as small templesstopped camphor showing instead they are showing the small lamps fixed in theplate itself. Any scriptural for this?

Camphor burns without a trace finally...it signifies the burning of the ahamkara and body consciousness.

addl piece of info---good one--

:focus: Since most of the camphor sold now are adulterated and produce lot of black smoke,

many temples have stopped using it for hArathi. It is done only with ghee lamps.

One advantage is that they can stay lit for more time. :thumb:

Disadvantage is that they don't give enough light to see the worshiped idol.

No one is perfect. But when actor Raghuvaran's pitch is remembered so well by a person,

how come he could NOT remember the characters in the epic Mahabharata!
Yes you know how to tease and inbetwen mahabaratha--such a marvellous brain to be kept in museum
