It's official: Jayalalithaa not going abroad for treatment, Apollo denies rumours

She will be discharged in a few days, the hospital says.

Dispelling all rumours of TN Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's health, Apollo hospitals announced on Sunday that there was no need to take her abroad for treatment and that she was responding well to treatment.

Speaking to the media at the Apollo Hospital premises in Greams Road in Chennai, Subbiah Vishwanathan, the COO of the hospital, said that she had fever and dehydration at the time of admission on 22 September.

Treatment was commenced immediately and her fever was controlled the very next day, according to him.

The COO said that she was under normal diet now and responding well to treatment.

All necessary tests are being conducted and medications being given, he said.

Subbiah Vishwanathan further emphasized that all rumours regarding her health and that she is to be taken abroad for treatment are false and baseless.

Jayalalithaa Chairs Cauvery Meeting In Chennai Hospital, Dictates Speech

Tamil Nadu | Reported by Smitha TK, Edited by Veer Arjun Singh | Updated: September 28, 2016 00:16 IST

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has been admitted at Chennai's Apollo hospital since Thursday.

New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa held a meeting in hospital today with ministers and top officials to discuss her government's response in the Cauvery dispute with Karnataka.

She has deputed the state's Public Works Department minister Eapadi Palanisamy to attend a meeting in her stead with Karnataka chief minister Siddaramiah ordered by the Supreme Court, a press statement said.

Ms Jayalalithaa has been admitted at Chennai's Apollo hospital since last Thursday and is being treated for fever and dehydration. The hospital and the state government have issued multiple reports to say she is responding well to treatment and will be discharged soon, seeking to quell rumours that the chief minister is very unwell.

Ms Jayalalithaa, today's statement said, dictated the speech that will be read out at the meeting with Mr Siddaramiah, which the top court has ordered the centre to facilitate by Friday.

The chief minister was briefed on the developments today in the Supreme Court, which has ordered Karnataka to immediately release more water from the Cauvery River to downstream Tamil Nadu for the next three days, as it hears the state's arguments on not being in a position to release more water till December.

Apollo Hospital said in a statement on Sunday that while Ms Jayalalithaa "continues to get better," she is under observation and has been advised a few more days of rest. It had dismissed as "baseless" rumours that the chief minister had been taken abroad for treatment, after which violence had broken out in Vellore and Vaniyambadi on Monday night. Some IT firms in Chennai too sent their employees home early, fearing any break in the law and order situation.

PMK leader Ramadoss said the state government must take steps to curb spread of rumours and urged the chief minister to release a video from the hospital.

In the last three days, 107 Amma canteens have been inaugurated, free Amma Wi-Fi zones scheme announced and nominations for local body elections submitted. Government authorities said even when in hospital, the chief minister is very much in command.

"Doctors are saying she should take rest, but you can see our Amma is still doing her duty. Even when she is in the hospital, the government is running. Everything is as per routine," AIADMK spokesperson CR Saraswathi said.

Jayalalithaa's health: When everyone in the state has ‘inside’ information

Everyone is a doctor and an undercover journalist too.

Ask anyone with a smartphone in Tamil Nadu and they’ll tell you what they ‘know’ about Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s health. You’re probably living under a rock, if you haven’t received an SMS or a WhatsApp/Facebook message of the 68-year-old leader’s health report.

Since her admission late on Thursday night at a private hospital in Chennai, forwards of Amma’s ‘progress report’ has been passed on from person to person, or in the case of WhatsApp, from group to group. These social media health bulletins allegedly reveal everything from the CM’s medical diagnosis, her vital parameters to the date of her discharge. With medical terminology thrown in, the authenticity of these messages are never doubted, nor their source of origin verified.

Excerpts:

Doctor-patient confidentiality?

Many argue that Jayalalithaa’s health should remain confidential and her doctors are bound by the Hippocratic oath. But journalists like Radhakrishnan argue that the public has the right to know about the Chief Minister, a democratically elected leader’s health. And while security may be a concern for government officials, rumour mongering can very often spiral out of control.
Following wild speculation over Jayalalithaa’s health during the weekend, doctors together with the Health Minister and the Health Secretary called for a press meet on Sunday to put an end to the rumours. But instead of addressing questions about the Chief Minister’s hospitalisation, the press meet was off-limits to reporters. Camerapersons were allowed entry to record the prepared statement of the hospital.

To kill all rumours surrounding the CM’s health, Radhakrishnan says, “The hospital has no escape but to give people the truth.”

While we all hope and pray for her speedy recovery, it seems rumour mongers are having merry time in spreading....

Jayalalithaa's illness: AIADMK denies rumours, but secrecy over CM's health remains

Excerpts:

A highly placed functionary in the Tamil Nadu government confirmed to Firstpost that the latest aggravation in Jayalalithaa's condition was a lung infection that led to breathlessness. Sources both within the government and outside have also indicated that she was even put on the ventilator for a while on Wednesday morning and it was withdrawn after her condition stabilised. "Her condition is not alarming," said the source who claimed he was aware of what was happening inside the hospital. AIADMK spokespersons have also said she is doing fine, deploring the panic that Whatsapp message forwards are spreading.

But with the over-secretive world of Jayalalithaa not even letting a mobile phone onto the floor at the hospital, skeptics who suspect spin doctors are at work, exist by the dozen. Among them, PMK leader S Ramadoss, who asked the CM's office to put out a video to prevent rumour mongering.

After noon news bulletins says a specialist (Critical care expert)Doctor from London has arrived in Chennai to take care of Amma's treatment. Hospital's non issuance of any medical bulletin has given fuel to rumor mills.

Meanwhile, DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Friday demanded that Governor Vidyasagar Rao should take steps to ensure that the true health condition of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is revealed to the people with appropriate evidence through the media. In a strongly worded statement in Chennai, he pointed out that the Governor had not visited the CM even though she has been in hospital for a week now Keeping her health condition under wraps is triggering rumours in social media, he said and added that it would not be improper to release her pictures at the Apollo Hospital to clear the confusion and quell the rumours, especially when reports came out that she was discharging the government duties from the hospital bed.
The state information department had on September 27 claimed the CM had that evening held an hour-long meeting in her Apollo hospital room with chief secretary, advocate general and other senior officials on the Cauvery issue and dictated her speech to be read out at the meeting convened by the Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharati in Delhi on September 29.

Jayalalithaa is healthy, asserts AIADMK

The AIADMK today asserted that its hospitalised party supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is "healthy".

"Amma (Jayalalithaa) is healthy. She needs rest as per doctors' advice and will return in good health," senior AIADMK leader and former Minister P Valaramathi told reporters.

She said Jayalalithaa was performing official duties and pointed out that she had even announced the party's candidates for this month's civic polls while being hospitalised.

"Some jealous people are carrying out a wrong campaign to confuse people by spreading rumours" about Jayalalithaa's health, she said.

Suffering from pulmonary edema!(fluid accumulation in lungs)..Treatment is available for that too!

[h=1]Jayalalithaa out of danger? suspense continues over chief minister’s health[/h] [h=2]Since Apollo's medical bulletins were the only credible source, rumours suggesting that she has been suffering from pulmonary edema and was unable to breathe filled the gaps in information.[/h]

AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa. (PTI Photo) As suspense continued over the condition of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s health, doctors at Apollo have maintained that she has been responding positively to the treatment. “Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s health continues to improve and is responding adequately to the comprehensive treatment being given to her,” the latest bulletin read. Despite the restrained reporting by local media over her health, former Hindu editor Malini Parthasarathy shared on Twitter that Jayalalithaa is out of danger and is responding to treatment. “One happy news amid the gloom & doom: CM Jaya certainly recovering & out of danger as seen by a close associate who visited her at hospital,” she tweeted.

Fondly called Amma by her supporters, the chief minister was admitted in the hospital on September 22. The first health bulletin released by the hospital claimed that she is receiving treatment for fever and dehydration. However, the hospital later confirmed that she is being treated for an infection and the fever has subsided. The infection treatment includes an antibiotics course and providing respiratory support.
A specialist from the United Kingdom was flown in last Friday to assist doctors at Apollo. Dr Richard Beale, a critical care physician at the London Bridge Hospital, examined the chief minister and held discussions with the Apollo doctors. Beale was brought in as he has handled many cases and done research on Sepsis, a life-threatening condition, and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.
Since Apollo’s medical bulletins were the only credible source, rumours suggesting that she has been suffering from pulmonary edema and was unable to breathe filled the gaps in information. It came to a point where the hospital had to deny reports that she was set to be transferred to a hospital in Singapore for multiple organ failure. An FIR was also registered by the state police against an Indian women residing in France for spreading falsehoods about Jayalalithaa’s health. A 47-year-old AIADMK worker, Muthusamy, died of heart attack after being reportedly upset over the rumours.

Amid the face off with neighbouring state Karnataka over sharing Cauvery waters, Jayalalithaa purportedly left instructions with her staff on how to respond to Karnataka as the state defied Supreme Court orders to release water to Tamil Nadu twice. DMK supremo and former chief minister Karunanidhi urged the government to release a photo of her meetings with the Cabinet and support staff. The former chief minister hoped that Jayalalithaa would recover soon, but stressed that it was important to dispel the rumours surrounding the status of her health. A PIL was filed on Monday at the Madras High Court requesting the same.
Acting Tamil Nadu Governor Vidyasagar Rao paid a visit to the hospital to inquire about Jayalalithaa’s health. “Governor Rao entered the critical care room along with Apollo founder Prathap C Reddy and saw Jayalalithaa,” an official source told The Indian Express, refusing to reveal further. Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan was also one of the few top leaders to visit Amma. Jayalalithaa’s close aides Sasikala Natarajan and O Panneerselvam, who took over as chief minister when she was in jail, have been camping on the second floor of the hospital. News channel NDTV reported that six bureaucrats have been running the government in her absence. All the secretaries looking over the 54 government departments have been reporting to Chief Secretary Sheela Balakrishnan, sources told NDTV.
Meanwhile, AIADMK workers performed a homam, praying for the quick recovery of their leader. As supporters continued to flock the hospital on Greams Road in large numbers, police have barricaded both sides of the road and restricted entry to only a few in the party. “We are not letting party supporters in as the crowd will affect operations of the hospital,” said a deputy commissioner posted outside the hospital.

[h=1]Jayalalithaa's health: How things unfolded inside and outside Chennai's Apollo hospital[/h]
TS Sudhir Updated: Oct 3, 2016 17:44 IST

Two SOS calls went out from the Tamil Nadu chief minister's residence in Chennai past 10 pm on 22 September. The first one to Apollo hospital, asking for an ambulance to be rushed to Poes Garden immediately. Senior doctors were asked to be on standby for the VIP patient. The second to the top cops asking for traffic to be cleared for the CM's convoy at that late hour.
Within minutes, the ambulance was rushed and the Critical Care Unit (CCU) on the second floor at the hospital was made ready. Security paraphernalia of the Chennai police was rushed to the hospital and the 3 km distance from the CM's home to Apollo hospital on Greams Road was converted into a green corridor. Within 15 minutes, Selvi Jayalalithaa Jayaram, 68, was wheeled directly into the CCU.
She was immediately put on non-invasive treatment, with tests done simultaneously to check different health parameters. Soon word spread that the CM had been hospitalised and by morning, crowds began to swell outside Apollo hospital. A press release on the Apollo hospital letterhead said the CM was suffering from fever and dehydration.

The intention was clear. Information to the public was to be given on a need-to-know basis to ensure panic did not spread in the city and the state.
For a change, Tamil Nadu's political ecosystem behaved with dignity. All Opposition leaders, otherwise at daggers drawn with Jayalalithaa, wished her a speedy recovery. The Prime Minister and the governor also sent her their good wishes.
But outside the hospital, the virtual world was fueling rumours overtime in the real world. The first of them over Friday and Saturday spoke about how she is critical and would be flown off to Singapore for further treatment. Apollo hospital and the Tamil Nadu government denied the rumour the next day. The tone and tenor of the press conference on Sunday in which reporters were not allowed entry, was only to say all is well and under control.
But the feeling that something was amiss and the truth was not being revealed, persisted.
The second floor also houses the general ward and the ICU. The CCU portion where Jayalalithaa was admitted was cordoned off to ensure other patients and their attendants were not put to inconvenience. Three rooms were allotted to the CM's accompanying team, among them Sasikala, her trusted aide. Finance Minister O Panneerselvam, the senior-most Cabinet minister in the ministry too has been camping at the hospital. Dr Shivakumar, who is married into Sasikala's family, is also at hand. Care was taken to ensure mobile phones were not allowed anywhere near the CCU to ensure no pictures of the CM were leaked.
Around the same time, the dates for the local bodies elections in Tamil Nadu were announced. The AIADMK released the first list of candidates for the elections, as if to indicate it is business as usual. No one knows if it had already been cleared by Jayalalithaa before she was admitted.
On Tuesday, after the Supreme court heard the Cauvery case, a government press release announced that the CM chaired a meeting from her hospital room and even dictated her speech to be read out by the PWD minister at the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu meeting with Water Resources Minister Uma Bharathi in Delhi on Thursday. Given what is now known of her condition, the jury is out on whether the CM indeed presided over the meeting.
On Wednesday, the CM's condition deteriorated. "She went down and the medical team had to put her on ventilator to help in breathing and start invasive treatment,'' said the source. Well-known intensivist Richard John Beale, who specialises in cases involving critically ill patients, flew down from London to examine Jayalalithaa. An intel report had been sent to the political leadership of the country in New Delhi as well that Jayalalithaa's health was cause for concern.
It was then that those in Lutyens' Delhi realised that it was not just a case of fever and dehydration but something more serious. In the absence of any confirmation or denial officially from Apollo hospital or the government, conspiracy theories began to gain traction through WhatsApp forwards. The more outrageous the rumour, the more it lent itself to being shared on social media.
The government announced Rs 476 crore as bonus for PSU employees on Wednesday. The AIADMK's second list of candidates for the 17 and 19 October election was also released in the week. While the attempt would have been to convey that the leader is in-charge, doubts persist on who exactly is calling the shots.
In his rather sharp open letter last week, DMK chief M Karunanidhi quoted a report in a Tamil daily to name Sasikala and Sheela Balakrishnan (advisor to the Tamil Nadu CM) as the shadows who are trying to be the real person. Karunanidhi warned against unauthorised people with access to Jayalalithaa trying to run the state by proxy.
The political leadership in Delhi is aware that Jayalalithaa is not completely out of the woods yet, even though since Saturday she has been responding favourably to the treatment. The Apollo hospital said treatment for her infection was on while AIADMK leaders hoped she would be discharged in 2-3 days.
After his visit on Saturday evening, Tamil Nadu's acting Governor Vidyasagar Rao has sent a formal report to the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Home Affairs on Jayalalithaa's health condition and his own impression of the situation in the state. Delhi, sources say, is keeping a close watch and coordinating closely to ensure the systems are in place, even without a functioning head of the government.
The AIADMK has been instructed to keep up with its 'all is well' narrative. Former minister Valarmathi claimed Amma is in fact working from inside the hospital but glared back when asked if she got an opportunity to meet her inside.
CR Saraswathi, AIADMK spokesperson said, "Amma works for 22 out of 24 hours. Even those two hours, she only thinks of people's welfare. We want her to rest for a few days in hospital because she has been working so hard.''

Madras HC asks Tamil Nadu govt to submit info about Jayalalithaa’s health

The development comes 12 days after Jayalalithaa was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai after complaints of fever and dehydration.

Nearly two weeks after the hospitalisation of AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, the opposition continued to raise questions on who is running the government in absence of the CM. The matter was finally taken to the Madras High Court by a petitioner, Traffic Ramaswamy, a social activist, on Tuesday.

The case was not listed for the day but Ramaswamy prayed to the court to consider it claiming it was an urgent matter. Hearing his demand to the government to reveal Jayalalithaa’s actual health status, the government pleader argued that there is no urgency to hear the case since the hospital is releasing health bulletins on a daily basis.

Refusing to give an adverse order on Ramaswamy’s petition, however, the High Court asked the government pleader to get back, after consulting with the government.
The development comes 12 days after the chief minister was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai after complaints of fever and dehydration.

Confusion regarding her health has not dwindled as the state government has not released any official statement on the same. A bulletin released by the hospital on Monday said the health of the chief minister ‘continues to improve.’
“The treatment plan including appropriate antibiotics, respiratory support and other allied clinical measures are presently being continued to treat the infection,” said the bulletin. A specialist doctor from London, UK was also flown in to monitor Jayalalithaa’s condition.
DMDK leader Captain Vijayakanth also demanded on Monday that the state government should reveal her ‘actual’ health status.
Earlier, DMK supremo Karunanidhi – while wishing a speedy recovery for the Chief Minister – had said that the state government should release a picture or video of her in the hospital

Madras HC dismisses PIL seeking report on Jayalalithaa’s health condition, says it is a publicity interest petition

CHENNAI: The first bench of the Madras high court on Thursday dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by social activist K R 'Traffic' Ramaswamy which sought a report on the
health status of Tamil Naduchief minister J Jayalalithaa who is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai. The court termed the PIL as a "publicity interest petition."

"Do not try to use this forum for political purposes. This is nothing but publicity interest petition," said the bench, refusing to entertain the PIL.

Jayalalithaa was admitted to Apollo Hospitals on September 22 for "fever and dehydration." According to medical bulletins released by the hospital this week, the chief minister was given antibiotics to treat infection and kept under respiratory support.Noting that real situation was not being disclosed, Ramaswamy filed the PIL. On Tuesday, a division bench said it would not pass any adverse orders, but asked the government to give details. However, on Thursday the first bench curtly dismissed the PIL and noted that the hospital was issuing medical bulletins.
The court also declined to hear Ramaswamy's plea for appointing an interim chief minister.
When Ramaswamy's advocate said no one knew about the chief minister's health status, the bench said, "God knows."

MGR's health was worse, don't compare with Jaya's: Ex health minister hits back at Karunanidhi
Dr HV Hande was in charge of briefing the press when then Chief Minister MG Ramachandran was hospitalised in 1984.

Anna Isaac| Saturday, October 1, 2016 - 17:56

No comparison should be made between the hospitalisation of MGR with Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, says former Health Minister Dr HV Hande, who was in charge of briefing the press when then Chief Minister MG Ramachandran was hospitalised.
Hande was referring to MGR’s stint in Apollo Hospital in Chennai for a stroke in 1984, and his remarks come a day after DMK President M Karunanidhi said the Tamil Nadu government has a responsibility to inform the people about the Chief Minister’s health.
Handed_MGR_Jaya_Fb.jpg

The DMK patriarch had also advised the Tamil Nadu government to draw lessons from former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran’s stint at Apollo Hospitals, when regular updates about his health were released by Dr Hande.
Read: TN govt has responsibility to inform people about CM’s health, says Karunanidhi
“That situation was different from this,” says Dr Hande to The News Minute. Calling MGR’s hospitalisation “a major problem” back then, he recounts that the then chief minister was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai on October 6, 1984.
MGR had been rushed to the hospital following kidney failure. While he was on dialysis, he suffered a stroke on October 16. Hande recalls that a small committee was constituted and he, as the health minister in MGR’s cabinet, was nominated to brief the press on the chief minister’s health.
Unlike MGR’s health condition at the time, Hande points out that Jayalalithaa has been admitted with a fever and dehydration, as stated by the hospital. Despite the wild speculation and rumour mongering around Jayalalithaa’s health, the former two-time cabinet minister says the medical bulletins released by Apollo Hospitals are enough.
Hande_Jaya_facebook%281%29.jpg

Hande also pointed out that when Karunanidhi was admitted in hospital when he was Chief Minister, there was little update from the state government. He says this was also true when then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee underwent a knee surgery in 2000. “It was the hospital that gave a statement then, and not the government,” he notes.
