Confirmed rail tickets can now be transferred to other members of the same travel group
The Railway move comes as a welcome relief to passengers caught in a last-minute hitch

Not many seem to be aware of the option that Indian Railways now give passengers about transfer of a confirmed rail ticket to another member of the same travel group.
Confirmed rail tickets in a person’s name can be transferred to another member of the same group under certain circumstances.
The said passenger -in case of not being able to make the journey for whatever reason- must submit a written request to the Chief Reservation Supervisor at least 24 hours prior to the journey that his or her confirmed reservation be transferred to a family member which would include parents, siblings, children and spouses who is making the same journey.
The Indian Rail website enumerates in detail the circumstances under which such a transfer can be made:
-Where the passenger is a Government Servant, proceeding on duty and appropriate authority, makes a request in writing 24 hours before the scheduled departure.
-Where the passenger makes a request in writing 24 hours before the scheduled departure that the reservation made in his name may be transferred to another member of his family meaning father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband and wife.
-Where the passengers are students of a recognized educational institution and the head of the institution makes a request in writing 48 hours before the scheduled departure, that the reservation made in the name of any student be transferred to any other student of the same institute.
-Where the passengers are members of a marriage party and any person deemed to be Head of such party makes a request in writing 48 hours before the scheduled departure that the reservation made in the name of any member of the marriage party be transferred to any other person.
-Where the passengers are a group of NCC cadets and any officer who is the head of the group makes a request in writing at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure that the reservation of a cadet unable to travel be transferred in the name of any other cadet.
