Today I was talking on the above subject with my friend who is a brahmin & hails from Tirunelveli, , also abt the Mahamaham tank having wells similar to Wells in Ramaeswarm temple where theertha snam made after taking a bath there in sea. That time his wife told that they have never visited Rameswaram for theertha snanam, as my friend's parents are alive. I would like know from this forum is there any such practice is there ? If so, why?

Dear Sri Sivaraman

I don't see any relationship between Parents being alive and visiting Rameshwaram Temple for worship.

Yes Rameshwaram is one of the main places where one can perform rituals such as Thila Homam to atone
for non-performance of Shrardham and other Pitru Karyams.

But Rameshwaram is not a sthalam exclusively for Pitru Karyams alone. Parents being alive / no more is criterion
to visit the Temple / bathe in the 21 springs - Theerthams.
