CHENNAI: Identified as the youngest mobile application programmers in India and one of the youngest in the world, 15-year-old Shravan Kumaran and 14-year-old Sanjay Kumaran are creating applications inspired by real life incidents. The students of Hiranandani Upscale School, Chennai have developed 11 applications that are available in Apple store, Google’s Android play store and in Windows mobile store.
“Our father taught us the basics; gradually, we started learning Qbasic, animation and programming apps among others,” they say. Having created a company — Go Dimensions three years ago, the duo has come a long way at a very young age. “Most of our applications have got maximum ratings and all the apps have over 1 lakh downloads,” beams Shravan, president and co-founder of Go Dimensions.

Catch Me Cop, Alphabet Board, Prayer Planet, Colour Palette and Emergency Booth are some of their famous apps. Talking about GoVR, a virtual reality device they have designed, Sanjay says, “We always wanted a virtual reality device but whatever was available in the market was expensive, and we wanted a cheaper version. We have built an alpha version of the device and software and it is priced at Rs 799 unlike the rest which are around Rs 50,000.” The apps enable one to walk through virtual tourism, architecture review, and also have in-field game experience. What are their new innovations? “We are working on a device called lock and go. It tracks visitors to our home while we are away,” explains Shravan. It also helps you communicate with a person at the door and has wireless unlocking which allows the user to open the door. “This idea came about when we lost track of who visits our home while we were away at school or work,” shares Sanjay. The project was done under Rs 5,000 unlike full-home automation by some companies which cost over Rs 80,000. “We tried this for learning purposes and will be manufacturing later in future,” they share. Talking about concepts they would like to experiment on, Shravan shares, “We would like to learn data mining concept, research on artificial intelligence and cognitive learning.
“We have travelled a lot,” recalls Sanjay. “Some of the best moments of our lives were when we went to Korea and addressed over 2,000 people, and also when we got a personal mail from late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam after he saw our website.”
Where do they see themselves in the future? “We want to get the world’s 50% smart phone downloads for our apps. We essentially don’t want to work under a company. We want to become entrepreneurs and full time programmers.”
Both are big football fans and they confess that the only thing they argue about football, and the famous Ronaldo-Messi rivalry. “We play badminton and are movie fanatics,” adds Sanjay. Their advice to budding programmers and the youth? “Always do what you love and love what you do,” says Shravan. “Buy a good programming book, and don’t lose focus,” adds Sanjay.
