With effect from 1-1-2016
Restricted dress code will be implemented in the Hindu temples of Tamilnadu.
For Men: Pant. Shirt. Paijama. Dhoti.
For Women: Saree. Half saree. Chudithar with fully covered upper cloth.
Apart from above mentioned dress code is strictly prohibited. If found they will be severely dealt with by the police complaint.

How much impact that the new dress code would make on the people who are lingering around in the temple premises, for reason obvious.

A very sensible order.
I hope it is adopted by all Temples.
 
Imo, this is a move that brings in a certain rigidity to our culture... a sign that we are becoming less tolerant.
 
This is really a good beginning. Each place has its own rules and when we go to places of worship, we should attract attention to ourselves as little as possible. Then only we as well as others can fully derive the benefit of going to a temple, viz. charging our spiritual batteries.
 
A welcome decision indeed. It should be implemented all over India I should say and not limited to female devotees. I have seen plenty of male devotees (should they be addressed so is a question mark) visit temples in North India in Bermudas and sleeveless T-shirts/Banyans. In my opinion people should visit temple out of Bhakti and not to cause any fashion parade. Unfortunately lot of people conveniently prefer to forgo this. Even Gods in India needs Judicial assistance!!

The Sanctum Sanctorium (Garba Graham) in a Temple has lot of Gravitational Force and built with traditional method of architecture. Based on this reason we The Hindus consider Garba Graham as place of utmost pure and no one is allowed to enter Garba Graham except the Battacharyas or Sivacharyas. The main point we should understand is while entering the temple the person must be clean both physical and mental. Men used to do Sashtanga Namaskaram and women do Pancha Anga Namaskaram. Our body receives magnetic rays from the idol which are good for health. Both our body and mind free from the thoughts of wordly affairs and attraction from others who are with us in the worship place. The very purpose of going to temple is to practice of such taming of one's own mind only. Usually, now a days, we used to pass sarcastic comments on some or the other issues and dress. In order to avoid attraction from genders and devote yourself towards prayer we wear the bare minimum cloth in our body. The very purpose for which we go to temple, viz. cleansing of one's own mind of all negative thoughts, viz. Kama (desires), Krodha (Anger), Moha (Non-apprehension and misapprehension of reality), Madha (overproud and egotism on one's strength and power etc.), Matsarya (the attitude enmity towards others), etc.etc. and thus stabilise on all positive qualities so that we can be able to live a better life. Today in a cosmopolitan life people are not having peace of mind and stress, tention, agony and many more resulting BP, Diabetic which are common in our day to day life. In the recent natural calamities no religious places were affected which shows a Cosmic power prevails beyond vision. Let us believe ourselves so that we can believe our survival. Government, Court, Bureaucrats and other do their duties based on certain principles and guidelines. Let us also follow our culture and follow the principles and practices adopted by our forefathers. Nothing wrong in that. A Muslim do not enter Masjid without a cap on his head, a Christian will not go to Church without putting a small cloth on his head, A Sikh also do the same. If a Hindu enter a Masque or Church or Gurudwara people in the Sanctum Santorium will compel us to wear cap or kerchief which they used to keep readily and offer to wear. Why Hindu should not follow our custom and culture. Is it anything wrong. Religions are created by Humans not God. We adopted the created religion. Therefore, we should feel shame in doing our practice and follow our principles.

This seems a little Talibanesque.

There are lots of young kids in India (regardless of gender) who like to wear tops/pants. What makes jeans/pants obscene for women and not for men?

the temple is NOT MALL.....nothing wrong....in the ARMY....we have four dress codes everyday....if u want serve army....u have to

follow dress codes....same way ...if u want to go to temple...follow the temple dress rules....ONLY HINDUS GRANTED FOR EVERYTHING.....NOT

IN GURUDWARAS/CHURCH/MOSQUE......too much freedom in hinduism....so govt/court has to implement the rules...

I am back after 4 days roaming around Thiruvanathapuram - Padmanabhaswamy temple has a strict dress code But lacks " Undress Code"!! You can see thousands of men and women Undressing in front of the Nada to get in to dhothi and mundu which is made available for a rent of Rs.40 Looks like Bay watch - a semi nude crowd trying to get into the accepted Dress Code - Men are half naked women in Mundu wrapped around clownishly - fit to be in a fancy dress sessions! This temple needs "Undres Code" as well! More on this temple will follow!

the dress code and commercialisation surrounding it besides people going bare bodied with borrowed dhoties or mundus

around their normal clothes removes whatever devotional feelings one might have and one feels a sense of revulsion

instead of bhakthi. I swore that I will keep away from temples in south . This holiday, I have kept away from them

I went around these places starting with Tiruchendoor Thiruvananthapuram Padmanabha swamy & Attukal Bhagaathi) Kovalam - Padmanabhapuram Palace - Thiruparappi falls - Kanyakumari - temple terribly crowded Commercialization at its worst The feery as usual withdrawn due to high tides - you feel more of Burma Buzzar shopping and less Bhagavathi Amman in KK and finally Suchindram temple.

Commericialization is much less in Kerala than in Tamil Nadu temples No Parking fees around the Temples Even in Kovalam Beach Parking is free High Speed Boad for 6 (4 adults 2 Children) is only Rs.400/- Autos run by Metere charges!l Most of the roads are free with no Toll in Kerala. Even Dharshan is cheeper. In Tiruchendur Rs.250 per head and your not given any prasdham But in padmanabhaswamy you get prasadham & a can of Paayasam for Rs.180.
 
These sort of mAmAs make me sick in Kerala temples !

More so when the temple is crowded and they dash on me! :yuck:

Poor guys yaar...they are just following the rules of the temple.

May be there is some reason why men should be bare chested..may be some cosmic rays of a divine kind penetrates a bare chest better than covered skin in a male.

Males are known to suffer from Cardiovascular disease more than females becos they lack estrogen which is cardio protective.

So who knows may be males need the cosmic rays to help protect their heart?

We females have estrogen to protect our hearts till we attain menopause...may be that is why we need not go around topless in a temple!(well... that would give Mamas a heart attack too!LOL)

I fully agree with you Krishji. We were in in the same temple last month, and i too came to the same conclusion.

The origin of the "topless males" dress code is from a medieval feudal practice under which any servant or lower cadre male had to remove all upper clothes from his body in the vicinity of his feudal lord. (It is another matter that this rule applied also to the women belonging to most castes.) So when Padmanabha or any other deity is worshipped as the "Lord" people were required to show the very same kind of respect for those "Lords of the universe" residing in the idols within the Garbha Grihams.

Incidentally, even the Namboodiri women, the very highest caste in Kerala, had to come topless to the temples, but they were permitted to hide their upper parts by deftly using their "OlakkuDais" which could be used even in front of the Garbhagrihams.

Women's dress code has changed over times but menfolk still adhere to the feudal 'Sampradaayam'.

Hmmmmmm. Women are saved! :)

In Padmanabhaswamy temple, ladies and girls are not allowed to wear dresses that show theit legs separately even if covered fully.

Hence they hire single dhotis from the shops in front of the temple and wear it over churidhar / salwar!

I guess viewing separated legs would cause the men to totally "lose it", but only when inside the temple.
