400-year-old temple razed, HC summons archaeologist
The Madras High Court has directed the personal appearance of a consultant archaeologist, on whose opinion a 400-year old temple was reportedly pulled down.
Hearing a plea by Rangarajan Narasimhan from Srirangam, the First Bench comprising Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana, said, “It is the matter of great concern to us on a temple which is claimed to be more than 400 years old, has been demolished on an opinion of a consultant archaeologist K.T. Narasimhan on the basis of the information gathered by him that the temple is the root cause of some inauspicious incidents.”
The petitioner had submitted that some temples in Namakkal, Tirupur and Erode districts were demolished on a report filed by conservationist.
Claiming that the demolished temples were of archaeological significance with their rock pillars were over 100 years old, the petitioner submitted that they were pulled down on the opinion of the consultant archaeologist. The case was posted for Monday next.
