400-year-old temple razed, HC summons archaeologist

The Madras High Court has directed the personal appearance of a consultant archaeologist, on whose opinion a 400-year old temple was reportedly pulled down.

Hearing a plea by Rangarajan Narasimhan from Srirangam, the First Bench comprising Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana, said, “It is the matter of great concern to us on a temple which is claimed to be more than 400 years old, has been demolished on an opinion of a consultant archaeologist K.T. Narasimhan on the basis of the information gathered by him that the temple is the root cause of some inauspicious incidents.”

The petitioner had submitted that some temples in Namakkal, Tirupur and Erode districts were demolished on a report filed by conservationist.

Claiming that the demolished temples were of archaeological significance with their rock pillars were over 100 years old, the petitioner submitted that they were pulled down on the opinion of the consultant archaeologist. The case was posted for Monday next.

The role of HRCE department in this sounds very fishy...This is happening during the regime of a God fearing, Hindu friendly CM??

Anti=social elements who got the to know the wealth and valuables of old temples hand-in-glove with local politicians and other Department agencies are reported to be having merry time in demolishing such temples and silently looting wealth.

God fearing activities exhibited by such thugs may be to have access to such temples to loot.

In some ancient temples they are idols made of precious stones but neglected without any attention and significance. But few who are closely attached to such temples who have fair knowledge about such idols and its intrisic value, take advantage to loot them by proposing to demoslish such temples.

The looters deserve our strongest condemnation and should be shot in public...These deserve not an iota of our sympathy

VGanesh Ji,

Here is TOI article on the topic which is more informative:

Ancient temples face razing as superstition rules the roost

Excerpts: It was the 45-year-old PIL-petitioner's contention that the consultant had first recommended demolition of Arulmigu Marudhakali Amman Temple in Periyur, Thummankurichi in Namakkal district. The 100-year-old temple was demolished 'for not being in Dravidian style," he claimed. Quoting the temple priest, the PIL said the decision to demolish the temple was taken after authorities engaged the services of a Kerala-based tantric who pronounced that the demolition of the temple was a remedy to restore peace in the village.

A 330-year-old temple - Arulmigu Periyanayagi Amman Temple at Papini in Tirupur district - too was demolished after the consultant-archaeologist of the HR&CE department said the temple was not rich in either art or architecture. Demolition was done on the basis of a two-page report of the consultant, where he paid no heed to understand richness of the temple's architecture.

There was not even a mention of the basic history of the temple, the PIL said. Arulmigu Mariamman Temple, Veerappan Chathiram in Erode district, aged 200 years, was a living monument and not a ruin when it was demolished, the PIL added.

As mentioned in the first comment, the demolition exercise may be an excuse to take away the hidden or otherwise of the valuables.

Where is the real appreciation for such temples which have rich architectue?

Only temples which attracts more crowd seems to be spared, may be having an eye on revenue collection.
