hi all,

Do anyone possess any good reference material on Garuda Purana ? I would really like to read/just have basic understanding of what was said in it mostly on the concepts of death or what rituals generally are performed after death and how the jIva leaves the material world to naraka/swarga/eternal place and how many days after death, jIva gets released from earthly plane or how many days it wanders around the dead physical body and so on......

Garuda Purana generally talks about the punishments being award to those who are committing sins.
The book is not supposed to be kept at home. There are around 28 Naragams according to Garuda Purana.
Yamadharma according to their nature and seriousness of the Sins awards the punishments.
The departed soul could see the messengers of Yama and the attendants of Lord
Viṣṇu. This means
that the soul can see both good and bad and the departed soul begins its journey according to one's own karma.
A subtle body which has a bad karmic account feels for its sins at this stage.

Also garuda purana story are told in premises where unnatural death/s (suicide, murder,..) has/have taken place to ward off the evil effects.

The rituals that follow a death in the family, like lighting an oil lamp with one wick facing South, one line open kOlam, rice ball

made in spherical shape, weeping while taking head bath, serving food by twisting the right hand in clockwise direction etc.

Since Garuda puranA is read when a death occurs in the family, it is feared to be an inauspicious book. But recently, when I bought

a new book after my dear mom left this world, the book had a note that it could be read on some special days in the year too!

I came across this answer when I google searched for the answer. Here it is:

''It can be read on normal days as far as I know. The Garuda Purana has a part known as preta kalpa which describes the

journey after death and the related rituals to be done. Those are referred and read during the occasion of the passing away of

someone. So it has become a taboo or fear to read it on other days like it has happened with the sentence "ram naam satya hai"

(Rama's name is truth).

So at different places of the purana it has been praised and suggested to read as it offers punya and bestows desires. For example,

consider the following verse:

tat śrīmadgaruḍaṃ puṇyaṃ sarvadaṃ paṭhatastava [GP - 1.3.9]

- That auspicious Garuda purana when read gives punya and all objects

taduktaṃ gāruḍaṃ puṇyaṃ purāṇaṃ yaḥ paṭhennaraḥ

sarvakāmamavāpyātha prāpnoti paramāṃ gatim [GP - 1.240.34]

- That man who reads this auspicious Garuda purana attains the supreme destination having obtained

all his desires.

Given the nature of the subject matter that the purana contains, some portions of it may be considered as inauspicious by

people, but I have not come across anything that forbids its reading. In fact at many places it has been praised and suggested to

be read as mentioned in the above verses.''

Why Garuda Puranam can be read on specific days only?

The importance of performance of Srardham, which I read in one of the books, I would like to mention it here.

The Garuda Puran is one of the Vishnu Puranas. It is essentially a dialogue between Lord Vishnu
and Garuda (a kind of bird).

This Purana deals specific issues of Hindu philosophy connected with death,
funeral rites and reincarnation. As I said earlier, this book is not to be kept at home.
