Python to Spider, Range of Animals Tumble Out of Man's Bag at Airport

CHENNAI: Customs officials at the Chennai International Airport accustomed to intercepting smuggled star tortoises or gold were shocked to discover a range of animals right from python to chameleon and mongoose in the bag of a passenger on Friday.The passenger, Habeeb Nashtar (44) from Ramanathapuram, was returning from Malaysia on a Malaysian Airlines flight no MH 180 on Thursday. Two mongooses, three white squirrels, four red pythons, nine spiders and two chameleons were recovered from different packages from his bag, a customs release here said. Shocked officials immediately called the Tamil Nadu forest department officials who have taken custody of the animals and kept them at the rescue centre in Velachery.
Conflicting reports emerged from sources at the Chennai airport regarding the presence of the animals in the bag. While one theory was that Habeeb had brought them to rear as pets, a forest department source stated that the passenger wasn’t aware that the live animals were inside the bag.
