The B. Sc. graduate had grifting down to an science: "If he sees that a foreigner is carrying a lot of luggage and has a bag tag of some flight, he starts talking with them on some or the other pretext and later offers help, like he taking care of their baggage if they want to go to the wash-room or helping them board their luggage on the train. Maddali has good command over English - this helps him befriend his victims," Baban Koyle, police sub-inspector of GRP, CST told NDTV. Working on foreigners from countries like Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Muscat and the UK, he would carry a small bag with him to look like a traveler.

Maddali, a retired textile worker worker, lived alone after his wife and left him due to his alcoholism. In fact, it he cheated people to afford his addiction. But he had one tiny redeeming quality - when Maddali found important documents the bags he stole, he returned them.

Soon after robbing Saudi Arabian resident Devidasan Shivram Sonar on the Mangalore Express in August this year, Maddali traced his address from the Saudi embassy and returned his passport. For Nigerian resident Ruko Miga Muphija Issa, a student of Tamil Nadu's Annamalai University, Maddali even contacted Issa to confirm if he got his passport back.
