Crisis in Our Rural Areas

To day someone had put out some nice charts that in our villages where more than 50% of our population stays is heading for a huge crisis.

There is reverse migration of urban poor to rural areas due to lack of work for labour class due to work on construction of roads and housing slowing down.

The rural labour wages has remained almost constant with just 3 % increase in the last year as compared to 10% or more a decade back.

Farm sector is bleeding with MSP for a number of commodities being less than cost of input.

Free power for agriculture is leading only to over pumping of water as the pumpsets are left on whole night flooding the field with excess water and the land

becoming saline.

The rural distress has started affecting rural spending leading to lesser off take of consumer goods and jewellery..

lack of efficient transportation and movement of produce is adding to woes and distress sale.

It is a bleak scenario . A time bomb waiting to explode with monsoon also playing truant in certain parts of india and farmers suicides on the increase.

There appears to be no silver lining.

The farmer leaders have disappeared. Farmers are truly orphans in the new economy.

True and a serve shock we can all expect with this slow down which I guess will be much worse than the 2008 Economic Crisis . The Golden days of Economic Liberalization are over and hard relaites we have to confront with now .

Unless the govts. at the centre and the states get out of the clutches of World Bank/IMF dictated measures of "development" our country's future will be like that of most undeveloped African countries — and that is what the western powers desire!

Since both Central and State Govts., are concentrating only on industrialization and service sectors, the farming community is left in the lurch.

If properly organized, agriculture is a good profession. We have sufficient inputs for agriculture - land, fertilizers, man-power, except to a certain extent water. If Govts. introduce recycling of waster water and directing it to agriculture continuously, we can sustain agriculture and people will return to villages.

From time immemorial, farming was got done by the zamindars through the serf-like Sudra caste people who had hardly any rights under the so called sanAtana dharma. After Independence and steps like Zamindari abolition etc., it has been the undeclared policy of governments to close its eyes to the agriculture sector being exploited (plundered?) by the rich farmers and the trading community. After 68 years of such plundering what is left of Indian farming is not likely to get back to a state of normal health.

Let us pray that food will be imported cheap!

What is required at rural villages is water for agriculture.

If there is water, there will be some kind of activity and labourers will get work and food at least half to their stomach.

I think God Varuna is not that much gracious; appear to have acquired the skills of Kumbhakarna.

The Rural areas are in for Crisis is part of the myths in Poor villagers believing that the moment you go to towns and cities they will be well off,but when they come to town they face real crisis of the staying in town and get into more vices like drinking Since at the start they come alone and get addicts to the same. Poor Dependants in Villages suffer extra as they are deprived by the nature and the policies of the governments.Government should find out means to improve the standards by using the available human resources to the constructive ways of improving the infrastructures by vigilant ways of ascertaining the funds allotted are reaching the concerned. This one will prevent the rural people from migrating to the urban places.
