Is it? Then why my staunch Vaishnavite friend refuses even to drink water in my sweet home? :dizzy:

Very Simple Logic Raji Madam

If you are not wearing Madisar, you are not MADI!!! Vizuppu... That's why your friend did not accept water from you!!!

You have to update your knowledge on 'madi' and 'vizhuppu', P J Sir!

A 'madisAr' is NOT 'madi' unless it is made 'madi'!

Which means ... a 'madisAr ' also can be 'vizhuppu'!! Got it?? :)

Traditional wear for iyer mamis too is madisar. But I think it is also known as 'sandai katcham'!
Is it?
Anyway, I know two methods of making the 'sandai katcham' a 'simple katcham' !! :decision:

BTW, I am not a staunch vaishnavite!!

It is not clear whether the mami in question is always in madisar. If not, vizhuppu starts from the mami. Madam has to only clear this doubt.

If you are a smartha, how can you be a Vaishnative in the first place, let alone the prefix 'staunch'. Your reply is confusing. Smarthas are not vaishnavites.

It is a common thing one can see in all religions. So many people from vaishnavite families embraced Shaivism and Abrahamic Religions.

A pseudo-rationalist from VK family has a muslim name as a suffix.

It is said poet Kalamegam, a born vaishnavite, became a Shaivite after marriage.

I am not a staunch Saivite too!
I am a believer in the 'Almighty', the super power and pray that power in many forms! :peace:

The mAmi in question is modern enough to visit the U S of A often! :plane:

She neither wears 'madi' six yards or 'madisAr', on all days! :nono:

Madi and vizhuppu are all about discipline and cleanliness.

Madisar is about a certain sartorial preference which is part of culture.

I was buying flower from a flower vendor in Adyar one morning. I was witness to this transaction between the flower vendor and an old vaishnavite gentleman (A retired IIT Chennai professor). The gentleman was buying flower and Tulasi from the same vendor and after giving a currency note was receiving the balance amount. He was very particular not to touch the hands of the vendor while receiving the balance and so was demanding that the money be dropped into his cupped hands without touching them. The vendor obliged. Another vendor who was also selling flower made a nasty comment about the old man's reluctance to touch the hands of the vendor. The old man replied, "I won't touch even my grandchildren at home until my puja is over and you are no better than my grand children." Those with an open mind can draw their conclusions from this transaction.

Not drinking water is a voluntarily accepted discipline and such people do not drink water even from some vaishnavite homes. Many elders who follow this discipline do not go about tom-toming it around. There are many other personal preferences which are also not to be flaunted.

For the crowd sold on cosmopolitanism and secularism nothing short of kissing every Tom, Dick and Rehman on the street will be enough to get the certificate on maturity.

So this particular mami's preference for a certain discipline in what she puts into her stomach need not be misunderstood to make it an issue.

Nice tutorial, Vaagmi Sir! Thanks.

I am NOT making an issue of that mAmi's habit but wanted to point out that I am NOT treated equal to her.

The OP says

FYI, she is one of my best friends. :)

Those who have taken 'samasrayanam' (also known as 'Panchasamskaram') normally do not eat or drink water in others' houses. My mother told me that even in relative's marriages, these people only eat certain varieties and do not eat other varieties. This is not about treating other unequally, rather should be viewed as keeping to one's oath rendered to the lord about keeping personal 'madi' a policy that is practiced always...

Thank you for telling me to be brief and not to go about teaching "grown up" intelligent, all knowing people like you. Okay let me brief:

If she had taken water from you but yet considered you not her equal in her mind for some strange reasons, it will be okay with you. If she considers you equal to her but refuses to take water from your "sweet home" you would still consider that she is not treating you as equal.

Thank you for teaching me this great truth without going about it in a tutorial. LOL

Thanks for this info.

Since I would not go searching for definition of who is likely to be a true SV person, the OP was interesting to read for me..

My comments below is not about anyone in particular or any religious group. It is more of an observation of human act.

==============

Human mind cannot but divide and see differences among people. The ego is too fragile and smart at the same time. It is smart to continue its existence in an 'acceptable' manner within the division it finds itself in and find ways to even feel special.

For example, people in various countries talk about how patriotic they are. Politicians love to drape themselves in the flag in order to show how much they love their country.

Similarly "devotees" love to surround themselves in a ritualistic fashion to their chosen God to feel special to their God/Goddess.

A "true Muslim" has definition of what it means to be one and feels affirmed in his/her ego position. A christian thinks he or she is a true christian based on his own definition.

The only thing common among these definitions is that they help to bolster the fragile ego of a person by enabling a feeling of being closer to their God. That leads to a delusional thinking that they are doing Gods command.

By observing ritualistic discipline they may be both sincere and greedy at the same time. They want a seat in heaven after death. ( whatever heaven called in their religion).

A person who cares deeply about welfare of others regardless of who they are and cares about all beings in general, is a true 'devotee'. Such people can come from any grouping including from SV background in my experience.

However those steeped into rituals feeding their ego are not likely to relate to what I have stated here. This post is not against any group including the SV group.

Thank you for telling me to be brief and not to go about teaching "grown up" intelligent, all knowing people like you. ............
You read too much between lines, Sir! :ranger:

FYI, I never ever think that I am 'all knowing', since I am not the Almighty! :)
