போரூர்-குன்றத்தூர் வழியில் அமைந்துள்ள கோவூர் ஸ்ரீசுந்தரேஸ்வரர் கோவில் புதன் தலமாக திகழ்கிறது. இந்த கோவில் கி.பி. 7-ம் நூற்றாண்டில் குலோத்துங்க சோழனால் கட்டப்பட்டது.
சிவனைத் திருமணம் செய்துகொள்ள வேண்டிக் காமாட்சியம்மன், மாங்காட்டில் அக்னி நடுவில் ஒன்றைக் காலில் நின்று தவம் செய்து வந்தாள். இவளது தவத்தின் காரணமாக உலகின் எல்லா இடங்களிலும் வெப்பம் தகித்தது. சிவன் அப்போது கண்களை மூடித் தவத்தில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்தார். முனிவர்களும், தேவர்களும் மகாவிஷ்ணுவிடம் உலகை காக்கும்படி முறையிட்டனர்.
விஷ்ணு மகாலட்சுமியைப் பார்த்து உலகை காக்கும்படி கூறினார். மகாலட்சுமி பசுவடிவில் வந்து சிவனை வழிபட்டாள். இதனால் சிவன் தியானத்திலிருந்து கண் திறந்தார். உலகம் மீண்டும் குளிர்ச்சியாயிற்று. மகாலட்சுமி பசுவடிவில் சிவனைப் பூஜை செய்த இடமானதால் கோபுரி என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டது. பின்னர் அதுவே மருவி கோவூர் என்று ஆகிவிட்டது.
இந்த கோவில் புதன் பகவானின் தலமாக விளங்குகிறது. சுந்தரேஸ்வரரையும், சுந்தராம்பிகையையும் பூஜித்தால் கோரியவரங்கள் சித்தியாகின்றன. இந்த ஊரில் ஏதோ மகிமை உள்ளது என்று எண்ணிய தியாகராஜர் மீண்டும் கோவூரில் உள்ள திருக்கோவிலுக்கு வந்து 5 கீர்த்தனைகள் சிவன் மீது பாடினார்.
அவை இன்றும் கோவூர் பஞ்சரத்ன கீர்த்தனைகள் எனப்படுகிறது. சேக்கிழார் பிறந்தது இந்த கோவூர் தலமாகும். இக்கோவிலின் தல விருட்சம் மகா வில்வம் ஆகும். இது 27 இலைகளைக் கொண்டது. இதுபோன்ற ஒரு வில்வமரத்தைக் காண்பது அரிது. இது மருத்துவ குணம் கொண்டது.

The temple was visited by the Carnatic music composer Tyagaraja who composed a set of five songs collectively called the Kovur Pancharatnam.
Reaching Kovur
From Guindy Kathipara Junction one should take the Butt Road leading to Porur Junction. From there take left towards the road leading to Kundrathur and you can reach Kovur in less than 5 KMS from the Porur Junction. The entrance is picturesque with an array of houses and tall Asoka Trees on either side and greets us by 85 ft high temple tower (Raja gopuram) unique and great in art and sculpture. This temple has the unique Maha Vilvam as its Sthala Vruksham. (Sacred tree in the temple) which has bunch of 27 leaves in one single stalk!!!
